The Manager, Compensation is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the compensation function, encompassing non-represented and represented employees. The Manager, Compensation plans, develops and implements compensation programs, policies and procedures to support the company's strategy and respond to industry trends. In addition, this position will have accountability for salary surveys, benchmarking, the annual compensation cycle, job evaluation, salary recommendations and pay equity. The Manager, Compensation will also serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance, advice and interpretation of various compensation policies.

General Accountabilities:

  1. Manages the day-to-day operations of the compensation team; provides guidance and support to compensation professionals in order to ensure effective program delivery and to promote learning and career development within the compensation function.
  2. Monitors the effectiveness of existing compensation policies, guidelines and procedures recommending revisions and new programs consistent with compensation trends and corporate objectives; coordinates implementation and provides guidance to corporate staff.
  3. Manages the participation in external compensation and policy surveys to ensure compensation practices remain market aligned and competitive to attract, retain and motivate employees.
  4. Manages the annual compensation cycle (Merit, short and long-term incentive plans) for non-represented staff, in collaboration with the compensation team.
  5. Supports the development of Board materials to seek approval for compensation related matters.
  6. Provides advice on pay decisions, salary recommendation, policy, including the design of creative solutions to specific compensation-related programs.
  7. Oversees the job evaluation function for all jurisdictions.
  8. Develops employee and manager communications to promote understanding and effective utilization of the organization’s compensation programs and processes.
  9. Collaborates with the labour relations team on compensation matters related to the collective bargaining process.
  10. Manage pay equity related matters.
  11. Keeps apprised of federal and provincial compensation laws and regulations to ensure company compliance.

Selection Criteria:

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, human resources or related field
  2. A minimum of 5 - 7 years’ related compensation experience or other relevant experience
  3. A minimum of 2 years of experience managing a team
  4. Must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  5. Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with senior stakeholders

Experience:

  1. Expert knowledge of compensation related concepts including, job evaluation, salary administration, incentive plan design, pay equity and administration in a complex organization
  2. Strong business acumen and understanding of the analytical processes and an understanding of how incentive programs can support strategic objectives.
  3. Excellent planning, organization, and problem-solving skills with the ability to successfully handle multiple concurrent priorities simultaneously
  4. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in the analysis of a wide range of data
  5. Proven ability to think conceptually, problem-solve, and generate practical solutions
  6. Excellent communication skills and the ability to summarize information concisely and present in written, graphical and/or verbal format in order to convey complex information to all levels of stakeholders
  7. Strong problem solving skills: able to define the problem and generate appropriate solutions in a timely manner
  8. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to build strong relationships within and across teams, peers, and business partners. High level of knowledge of HR systems and compensation concepts and structure
