Job summary

CAA Niagara in Thorold, ON is seeking an Accounting Manager to oversee daily accounting operations, manage a team of professionals, and ensure accurate financial reporting for CAA Niagara and subsidiaries. The role focuses on process improvements, internal controls, and timely close cycles.

The ideal candidate will have a 4-year degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA progress, and 3+ years of financial reporting experience with proven leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Own the financial reporting and general ledger structure and improve transaction processing
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities in partnership with the Director, Accounting
  • Ensure timely preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations and supporting analyses for accuracy
  • Monitor close performance metrics and drive process improvements
  • Support audits and regulatory filings as required
  • Ensure daily banking and invoicing activities are accurate and timely
  • Develop and implement new procedures and tools to enhance workflow

About the Role

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including managing a team of accounting professionals and completing the accounting for CAA Niagara and subsidiary companies. Overall, responsible for developing and maintaining practices, procedures, and development and leveraging of tools to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and addressing a multitude of accounting activities including transaction recording, cash and account reconciliation, and general ledger preparation.

The expected hourly or salary range for this role is $90,000-$110,000. Placement within this range will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the financial reporting and general ledger structure, including understanding, documentation, developing, and improving how transactions are processed through the general ledger systems.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities, ensuring accurate and timely reporting and general ledger close processes in partnership with the Director, Accounting.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting analyses to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate documentation.
  • Monitor close performance metrics and drive improvements to reduce cycle times, enhance quality, and strengthen close discipline.
  • Ensure compliance with established accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting requirements.
  • Support the annual and interim audit processes.
  • Support regulatory filings, rate applications, and related accounting analyses as required.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of the daily banking transactions.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of invoices.
  • Monitor bank balances and ensure allocations are completed.
  • Identify risk areas, research and evaluate best practices, and design, recommend, implement, and monitor controls and process improvements. Collaborate with other departments to support accounting needs and develop efficient, consistent processes.
  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Develop and implement new procedures and new tools (data capture, file uploads, automation) and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provide training to new and existing employees as needed.
  • Handle personnel issues relating to team conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
  • Participate in special projects as required, which may include acquisition due diligence and closing activities, accounting system conversions, and internal control reviews.

Education & Experience
  • 4-year Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA designation or working towards.
  • Minimum 3 years of prior experience in financial reporting
  • Experience in managing a finance team
  • Advanced knowledge of financial principles, accounting practices, and financial reporting
  • Experience with financial systems and transaction processing technologies (AXIS preferred)
Working Conditions
  • Working in an office environment with interruptions and competing priorities. This role is primarily in-office, based out of Thorold, ON.
  • Working at a computer for extended periods, including frequent use of financial systems.
  • Occasional work outside regular business hours may be required to support month-end and year-end close, audits, or other operational requirements.
