Job summary

St. Albert Public Schools is seeking a Literacy Intervention Teacher for an assignment with Student Services, to provide targeted reading and writing supports for K-6 students and assist school teams with literacy instruction.

Reporting to the Coordinator, Division Intervention Services, this 0.5 FTE, temporary position runs from September 2026 through June 2027 and centers on MTSS-informed, explicit instruction and progress monitoring in literacy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education required.
• Alberta Teaching Certificate required.
• Experience in elementary reading and writing intervention.
• Knowledge of evidence-informed literacy instruction and MTSS.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading and writing intervention individually and in small groups.
• Use screening, diagnostic assessment, student work and observations to identify needs and plan intervention.
• Deliver explicit, systematic instruction in word-reading, spelling, fluency, comprehension and writing.
• Monitor and document progress; adjust instruction based on evidence.
• Teach students to monitor understanding and apply literacy strategies in classroom learning.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, school administrators, and families to share progress data and adapt strategies.
• Model evidence-based practices to build staff capacity.

Job description

St. Albert Public Schools is seeking a Literacy Intervention Teacher for an assignment with Student Services. Working under the guidance of the Coordinator, Division Intervention Services, the teacher will provide targeted reading and writing intervention for K-6 students and support school teams in strengthening literacy instruction. The role is guided by the St. Albert Public Schools Literacy Framework.

FTE: 0.5 FTE, Temporary from September 2026 - June 2027

Responsibilities

• Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading and writing intervention individually and in small groups, using classroom-based support and co-teaching where appropriate.
• Use screening, diagnostic assessment, student work and observations to identify needs, set measurable goals and plan intervention within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS).
• Deliver explicit, systematic instruction in word-reading and spelling, fluency, comprehension and writing based on students' assessed needs.
• Monitor and document progress regularly; adjust instructional focus, grouping and intensity in response to the evidence.
• Teach students to monitor understanding, to use reading strategies flexibly and to apply developing skills in classroom learning.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, school administrators, the Inclusive Learning Team, the Coordinator, Division Intervention Services, and families to share progress data, adapt strategies and connect intervention with classroom instruction and IPPs, where applicable.
• Build staff capacity by modelling evidence-based practices, helping teams interpret reading evidence and apply effective strategies.

Qualifications And Attributes

• A Bachelor of Education degree and valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
• Experience delivering elementary reading and writing intervention and using assessment to guide instruction.
• Knowledge of evidence-informed literacy instruction, including foundational reading and writing development.
• Build students' confidence and independence as readers.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
