Job summary

YMCA Calgary seeks a part-time LINC Instructor to deliver English language and Canadian culture lessons to adult newcomers. Classes run daytime and afternoon, with in-person sessions from 11:45 am to 2:45 pm, starting Oct 1, 2026 and ending March 31, 2027, with possibility of extension.

The role requires a Bachelor of Arts in English/Languages/Education, ESL/PBLA credentials, PBLA familiarity, and strong communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language, Languages, or Education.
  • TESL/TESOL/ESL certificate is an asset.
  • PBLA certification is an asset.
  • Teaching experience required; PBLA teaching experience is an asset.
  • Willingness to certify PBLA through online training.
  • Awareness of and empathy for issues facing new Canadians.
  • Current knowledge of LINC/ESL and resources.
  • Superior communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificate within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider (asset if issued by Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John\'s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol).
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Three professional references.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver lessons in English language and Canadian culture to adult newcomers based on Canadian Language Benchmarks.
  • Maintain records of lessons and research diverse teaching resources.
  • Ensure activities develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
  • Assess progress using portfolios and update activities accordingly.
  • Assess individual student needs and monitor classroom dynamics; maintain records and attendance.
  • Submit attendance sheets daily and keep instructor binder up to date.
  • Submit monthly lesson reports.
  • Attend quarterly Professional Development days.
  • LINC instructors report to the LINC Supervisor.

LINC Instructor - Daytime Afternoon (Part Time, Contract) Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge Salary: $31.05/hour -$37.40/hour Start Date: October 1st, 2026 End Date: March 31, 2027 with possibility of extension

What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?
  • Prepare and deliver interesting, relevant and meaningful lessons in English language and Canadian culture to adult newcomers to Canada based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks and needs of the students;
  • Maintain records of previous lessons; researching and utilizing a variety of teaching resources;
  • Ensure activities are developing the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills;
  • Perform assessments of students’ progress on a regular basis (using student portfolios); introduce new activities and materials to enhance student learning;
  • Assess individual student needs; address student problems as necessary; monitor classroom activities and dynamics; · Maintain accurate student records of attendance and portfolios;
  • Maintain up-to-date instructor binder and submit attendance sheets daily;
  • Submit lesson reports monthly;
  • Attend quarterly Professional Development days
  • The LINC instructors are part of the YMCA team and report to the LINC Supervisor.
