Association for New Canadians NL is seeking a part-time Life Skills Officer in St. John’s, NL.

You will develop and deliver life skills programs, assess client needs, and report on outcomes, collaborating with settlement services and other departments to align activities with organizational goals. You will engage with diverse clients including refugees and immigrants, stay current with best practices, and help empower clients to thrive in their new homes.

Qualifications

  • Relevant Human Services degree (equivalencies considered).
  • Skilled in crisis intervention, conflict resolution and de-escalation.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written and oral communication.
  • Previous case management experience supporting a vulnerable population.
  • Knowledge of issues facing refugees and immigrants.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience developing goals, timelines and delivery methods.
  • Ability to record and compile client statistics for reports.
  • Second language ability is an asset (Arabic, Dari, Pashtu, Farsi, Tigrigna preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement life skills programs and activities for clients in collaboration with the settlement services team.
  • Conduct needs assessments to determine the life skills training needs of clients.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the life skills programs and activities, and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Create and maintain program materials, including participant manuals, training materials, and evaluation tools.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the organization to ensure alignment with goals and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations and service providers to enhance programs.
  • Document and report on program outcomes, and maintain attendance and evaluation records.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices and trends in life skills training and incorporate new ideas.

Association for New Canadians is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to the provision of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees.

Job Title: Life Skills Officer

Location: St. John’s, NL

Position Type: 1 part-time position until March 31, 2027

Closing date: Until filled

Reporting to the Settlement Services Manager, the Life Skills Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing life skills programs and activities for our clients. The officer will work closely with our settlement services team to identify the needs of our clients and develop programs that will help them acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in their new homes. The Life Skills Officer will also work collaboratively with other departments to ensure that the programs and activities are aligned with the goals and objectives of the organization.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement life skills programs and activities for clients in collaboration with the settlement services team. This may include workshops, training sessions, group activities, and individual coaching
  • Conduct needs assessments to determine the life skills training needs of clients
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the life skills programs and activities, and make recommendations for improvements
  • Create and maintain program materials, including participant manuals, training materials, and evaluation tools
  • Collaborate with other departments within the organization to ensure that life skills programs and activities are aligned with the goals and objectives of the organization
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations, educational institutions, and other service providers to enhance the life skills programs and activities offered to clients
  • Document and report on program outcomes, and maintain accurate records of participant attendance and program evaluations
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices and trends in life skills training, and incorporate new ideas into the programs and activities offered to clients
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Relevant Human Services degree (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Skilled in crisis intervention, conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to effectively engage with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication (both written and oral) skills
  • Previous case management experience supporting a vulnerable population
  • Knowledge of specific issues facing refugees and immigrants
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience developing goals, timelines, and delivery methods to achieve set objectives
  • Accurately record and compile client statistics and accomplishments to include in monthly activity reports
  • Ability to speak a second language is an asset – Arabic, Dari, Pashtu, Farsi, Tigrigna preferred
Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
  • Legal status to work in Canada
  • Flexible to work outside of standard core hours (Monday-Friday, 9am -5pm)
  • Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
