Job summary

Avalon Care Centre in Orangeville, Ontario is seeking a Life Enrichment Coordinator to lead planning, implementation and evaluation of activities for residents. The role emphasizes cultural sensitivity, resident autonomy, and inter-department collaboration.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will manage program budgets and work with families to enhance resident well-being and engagement in daily life.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, gerontology or related field.
  • Experience in health care or relevant setting as required by Ontario regulations.
  • Montessori or gentle persuasion approach preferred.
  • Experience with seniors in long-term care settings is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of individual and group program planning and evaluation for cognitive differences.
  • Active interest in ongoing education and professional development.
  • Knowledge of community resources and recreation program development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate culturally sensitive activities for residents.
  • Monitor participation and support resident choice and autonomy.
  • Collaborate with other departments and residents’ families; connect with the community.
  • Provide ongoing training to the team and assist with budgeting for the department.

Avalon Care Centre is a fully accredited long term care home in Orangeville, Ontario and serves 137 residents. Orangeville is approximately 60 km north of Mississauga and offers a small-town feel with big-city amenities, a thriving arts scene, extensive park and recreation facilities, and easy access to natural landscapes. The community is known for its welcoming, diverse population and serves as a growing hub with a good balance of cultural attractions and outdoor activities.

Join our team as a Life Enrichment Coordinator!

Reporting to the Executive Director, this position is instrumental in fostering a vibrant and engaging environment for residents to ensure their well-being and satisfaction.

The Life Enrichment Coordinator is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of culturally sensitive activities for residents. These activities address spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs. A crucial element of this function is monitoring participation and ensuring residents maintain choice and autonomy in selecting activities.

The Life Enrichment Coordinator collaborates closely with other departments and residents’ families, facilitates resident connection with the wider community, and provides ongoing training to the team. They are also responsible for the capital and operational budgeting processes for the department.

We are looking for the following qualifications and traits
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, gerontology or other related field from an Ontario post secondary institution, or a post secondary diploma, degree or certificate granted in another jurisdiction that in the reasonable opinion of the licensee is equivalent.

  • Experience in the health care or relevant field/setting as required under the Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021 ss. 72 (2) and Ontario Regulation 246/22);

  • Gentle persuasion approach or Montessori preferred;

  • Experience working with seniors in a long-term care setting;

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in individual and group program planning, implementation, and evaluation for those with differences in cognitive abilities;

  • Must demonstrate an active interest in ongoing education;

  • Must have knowledge of community resources, recreation program development and techniques;

  • Must be computer literate
