Are you passionate about road safety and skilled in driver education? The Government of Alberta is seeking a dedicated Licensing and Training Specialist to play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across our province. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence driver training standards and licensing processes, directly impacting the well-being of Albertans.

Role Overview

As a Licensing and Training Specialist within the Driver, Carrier, and Vehicle Services branch, you will be instrumental in evaluating and licensing Driver Training Schools, Driving Instructors, and Driver Examiners. Your expertise will guide the development and delivery of training programs, conduct examinations, and provide critical insights into policy and curriculum development. This role is central to maintaining high standards in driver education and licensing, contributing significantly to Alberta's transportation safety objectives.

Your Key Responsibilities Include

  • Evaluating and licensing Driver Training Schools, Driving Instructors, and Driver Examiners to ensure compliance with provincial regulations.
  • Developing and delivering comprehensive training programs for driver instructors and examiners across all licence classes.
  • Conducting theory and practical examinations for instructor and examiner applicants, as well as road tests for the public when required.
  • Reviewing and approving driver training curricula to align with current policies and legislative requirements.
  • Providing subject-matter expertise to inform policy development, legislative changes, and curriculum enhancements.
  • Maintaining accurate records and databases related to licensing and training activities.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to address inquiries and provide guidance on licensing and training matters.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors degree, PLUS 2 years related experience or equivalent as described

Equivalency

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

For Example

  • Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 5 years of experience
  • Related 2 year diploma PLUS a minimum 4 years of experience
  • Related minimum 6 years of experience

The Successful Candidate MUST Have

  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively deliver training and interact with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical abilities to assess compliance and make informed licensing recommendations.
  • Proficiency in curriculum development and adult education methodologies to create engaging training programs.
  • High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in evaluations and documentation.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving skills to navigate complex regulatory environments.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in driver education and licensing processes.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in driver training and licensing or a related field.
  • Licensed as a Driver Examiner in all licence classes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively within Alberta for training and evaluation purposes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta's Traffic Safety Act and related regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with learning management and licensing systems.

Assets

  • Experience in policy development and legislative processes related to driver training and licensing.
  • Familiarity with auditing and compliance monitoring within transportation safety programs.
  • Background in adult education, instructional design, or related fields.
  • Valid Alberta Class 1 operator's licence, including air brake endorsement and school bus certification.
