The position of Director of Research and Education (“DRE”) is responsible for leading Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC) research and education mandates. With input from the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the DRE sets research and education priorities and the annual research agenda. The DRE aims to develop excellent research, writing, and presentation skills in staff, contractors, and articling students. The DRE reports to the Board of Directors and liaises with the Executive Director on administrative functions.
Key Responsibilities
Research Program
- Set research and education priorities and annual agenda with input from leadership;
- Monitor emerging research, best practices, resources, and issues related to civil liberties and human rights in Alberta;
- Recruit, coordinate, and oversee research and education staff and contractors;
- Ensure timely completion of research and writing projects;
- Edit research drafts with attention to detail and accuracy;
- Produce high-quality research publications with academic integrity;
- Act as Principal to articling students (must be a member of the Law Society of Alberta);
- Collaborate on grant applications to support research and education initiatives.
Education Program
- Write articles on civil liberties and human rights for publication;
- Design educational resources and presentations in collaboration with educators and contractors;
- Develop workshops, webinars, podcasts, and videos;
- Coordinate delivery of educational projects across Alberta;
- Train educators and contractors to ensure up-to-date knowledge.
Staffing
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate research and education staff and contractors in consultation with the Executive Director.
Communications
- Develop and implement media and communication strategies in collaboration with the Executive Director;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Active member of the Law Society of Alberta with a law degree and extensive knowledge of civil liberties and human rights law;
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience in research and education teams;
- Strong research skills and ability to produce high-quality, ethical publications;
- Experience designing diverse educational resources;
- Proficiency in grant writing and securing funding;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to identify emerging trends and incorporate them into initiatives;
- Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects;
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed.
