Alberta Health Services is seeking an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse for the Unit 21 Inpatient Surgery at Royal Alexandra Hospital. You will deliver patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced surgical unit, participate in quality improvement, and support safe mobilization of patients with complex needs.

Licensed Practical Nurse - Urology and General Surgery

PCU 21 is a 28-bed unit providing care to urology and general surgery patients.The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards.Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional state, assists the patient with activities of daily living and provides the patient and family with relevant information and teaching.Working as part of a care hub, the LPN is responsible to collaborate with other members of the health care team, delivering consistent quality care, to meet the needs of the patient.Staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital serve a unique inner-city population, and we want to do it well. The surgery inpatient program maintains the expectation that all employees do so with pride, compassion, and respect.Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program.Must be able to think critically and respond to emergency situations.Position requires candidates to perform moderate to heavy patient handling work on a regular basis in order to ensure safe patient care and safety of unit staff. All staff are required to assist with mobilization of patients with a variety of ability levels and support needed.All applicants will be required to complete a med math exam. Exam results will be considered in hiring decisions.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Inpatient surgery experience, including clinical placements in school.Strong capacity for self-directed work and teamwork.IV, PCA, epidural, TPN, drains, and wound care experience.Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and priority setting skills.Demonstrated reliability in attendance and punctuality.Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.Personal skills including providing peer to peer feedback, conflict management, and patient concern resolution/patient relations.Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

2 years within the previous 5 years of previous surgical experience.
