Position Summary

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for maintenance and repair of a wide range of equipment including plumbing systems, boilers, and water treatment plant and should be familiar with mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, gas train, and HVAC systems. All duties will be carried out in accordance with all provincial, municipal codes and departments, and hospital policies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to emergency situations, such as equipment failures or system malfunctions, and perform necessary repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Repair water, steam, heating, and ventilation systems.
  • Lay out and install all plumbing and piping systems and fixtures including sinks, washbasins, toilets, scrub sinks, showers, emergency eye wash systems, and waterlines.
  • Consistently perform quality control checks of backflow prevention systems, valves, and other water purification and softening systems. Repair any system as necessary. Perform regular preventative maintenance on plumbing devices, including thorough inspection of washrooms throughout the Hospital as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot and perform regular maintenance of all plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Prepare and layout materials for repairs and/or new installations.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the domestic hot and cold water systems.
  • Liaise with other engineering and maintenance staff as necessary to solve any major plumbing problems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities, including equipment logs, work orders, and incident documentation in respective systems.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while working with plumbing systems, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
  • Carry out other plumbing duties as assigned.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Valid Provincial Trade Certification as a Plumber.
  • Backflow Preventer Certification an asset.
  • Able to read blueprints and plan layouts.
  • Must be customer and team-oriented, as well as self-motivated and able to work successfully with minimal supervision.
  • Able to respond to callback within a reasonable time.
  • Able to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Able to perform rotational on-call.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts.

Mandatory Competencies

  • Safety (patient, worker & workplace) is a BCHS Corporate Priority. The successful applicant will demonstrate good stewardship in the identification, reporting, and mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions.
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience as a licensed Plumber.

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge of Fire suppression systems.
  • Backflow testing experience considered.
  • Backflow Preventer Certification.
  • Reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts.
