Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking a Replacement Fleet Technician to ensure City vehicles and equipment stay in top condition, meeting legislated standards and internal guidelines. Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet & Supplies, you’ll diagnose and repair complex systems on automotive, truck, and heavy equipment, with attention to safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid DZ driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Certification: Automotive Technician (310 S) and Truck/Coach (310 T) preferred; registered apprentice possible for second cert.
  • Minimum of 7 years related maintenance experience.
  • Own tools suitable to trade required.
  • Physically capable of performing all duties.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mandatory commercial vehicle inspections per National Safety Code and related acts.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel systems on fleet equipment.
  • Standby and overtime as required.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment meet legislated standards and internal requirements.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment; fabrication and welding as needed.

Please note that the shifts will be Monday - Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. You will be required to be on-call approximately once a month

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet & Supplies, you will be responsible for ensuring the City vehicles and equipment are in optimal operating condition in accordance with legislated standards and internal requirements

Key Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Performing mandatory commercial vehicle inspections and other inspections in compliance with the National Safety Code, Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration System, and the Highway Traffic Act
  • Diagnosing and performing repairs to complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and fuel systems as they apply to automotive, truck, agricultural, turf and heavy equipment units
  • Additional duties as required
  • Standby and the ability to work overtime is required.
  • In addition to a High School diploma or equivalent, you possess a valid Ministry of College Of Trades Automotive Technician Certificate (310 S Automotive)* and Truck and Coach Certificate (310 T Truck and Coach)
  • Candidates with a certificate (310S or 310T) may be considered if they are registered apprentice for the second certification and will be compensated at the lower hourly rate until the second certificate obtained.
  • 7 years of related experience
  • Valid ‘DZ’ Driver’s License or able to get within 6 months
  • Skilled in the operations of various shop equipment and demonstrated fabrication and welding skills
  • Sound knowledge of computers and laptop diagnostics
  • Advanced courses in related discipline are considered an asset
  • Must supply own tools suitable to trade requirements
  • Physically capable of performing all the duties identified above
  • Consideration will be given first to internal candidates who have a mechanics license
  • As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a driver’s abstract meeting current satisfactory requirements (0 demerit points, no more than 1 moving violation, and no more than 1 non-moving violation)
