Library Technician

Full Time (12 month) position – 35 hours/week. Locations are to be determined but the position works at various schools and there is a requirement to travel between schools.

As one of the largest, most progressive, urban districts in the province, Burnaby provides comprehensive educational programs and services to 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities. The Burnaby School District is seeking a Library Technician. This key position is responsible to catalogue and classify library materials and enter, edit and manipulate data into a computer using specialized programs in order to maintain district library information. The Library Technician also performs a variety of general clerical duties to ensure the efficient circulation and maintenance of learning resource materials.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • In consultation with the District Administrator, develops cataloguing practices and classifies books and library materials in order to record, describe and index resources by applying Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress or Canadian subject headings, Dewey Decimal Classification and MARC formatting.
  • Assists students and staff by performing a variety of duties such as providing information on learning resources, signing out library materials, demonstrating the use of library equipment, preparing displays, retrieving library materials and shelving books.
  • Manages and maintains the web-based, district-wide library catalogue; installs, customizes and supports all relevant software not otherwise maintained by district staff or other support providers; coordinates data migration and retrospective conversions; imports, exports and manipulates catalogue data. Oversees and implements catalogue maintenance activities.
  • Operates a computer and peripheral equipment using library system software in the typing, storage, preparation, and circulation of library catalogue materials, booklists and labels.
  • Conducts computer searches; checks a variety of library materials and information for accuracy and completeness; downloads and edits MARC records.
  • Selects and uses professional tools and internationally accepted standards; maintains awareness of and implements changes and developments to the relevant areas of professional practice and knowledge-based systems.
  • Performs a variety of duties such as maintaining circulation records, locating resources, conducting bibliographic searches, conducting year-end inventory, and entering prepared data and information.
  • Receives and processes library materials for shelving and circulation and performs minor repairs on library materials as required.

Qualifications:

Successful Candidate Must Have

  • Completion of a two-year Diploma in Library & Information Technology, courses in computer applications, plus one year related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and equipment related to work performed.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer operation and software applications related to work performed.
