Position Description
JUNIOR SCHOOL (K-7) LIBRARY TECHNICIAN (CONTINUING – PART-TIME)
We invite applications for a continuing, part-time Junior School Library Technician position (0.3 FTE – equivalent to 1.5 days per week). This position commences on August 22, 2025.
About This Role
Reporting to the Junior School Learning Commons Leader, the Junior School Library Technician will support the operation of the Junior School Library/Learning Commons and foster a love of literature and reading in a Kindergarten to Grade 7 International Baccalaureate independent school setting.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
- Process new physical and digital collection acquisitions (e.g. catalogue, label, stamp, laminate dust jackets, update Accelerated Reader labels)
- Support Learning Commons systems (e.g. collection development, displays, collection features, collection of resources to support teaching and learning, collection audits and weeding, annual inventory, support oversight of student Library Monitors)
- Support the ongoing maintenance of Junior School digital collections
- Support the maintenance of and inventory of Learning Commons technology
- Check in/out books, process holds, monitor overdue materials and lost resources, shelve books, and repair books
- Support students with checking out materials
- Assist the Learning Commons Leader with delegating tasks to parent library volunteers
- Support the Learning Commons Leader with developing and supporting K-7 literacy initiatives (e.g. author visits, special guests, reading incentives, and book fairs)
- Other duties or tasks as determined in collaboration with the JS Learning Commons Leader
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two-year Library and Information Technology diploma from a recognised Canadian institution.
- Minimum two years of related work experience in an elementary school library/learning commons or children's library setting preferred
- Specialized skills in children's library programming are considered an asset
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with adults and children
- Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with teachers, students, and parent volunteers
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency with library cataloguing and database systems; experience with Destiny Discover, Microsoft Word, and Google Suite
- Strong organisational skills, including independent time management and task prioritization
- Familiar with automated business equipment such as photocopiers, audiovisual equipment, laminators, etc.
- Able to engage in lifting and carrying tasks and repetitive physical movement (e.g. low to high shelves, carrying books, unpacking books, pushing/pulling movable library furniture)
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
- First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain certification)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
