Job summary

The Mint is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide advisory services in corporate/commercial law, including contract drafting, procurement, and regulatory compliance, enabling the Mint’s commercial and operational activities.

Reporting to the Director & Senior Legal Counsel, you will advise across multiple areas while partnering with internal teams and external counsel to mitigate risk and support organizational objectives.

Qualifications

  • University degree in law from a recognized university in Canada.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada.
  • 7–10 years of experience in the practice of law, with demonstrated expertise in public procurement, commercial law, labour law, regulatory/compliance law and contract drafting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide practical legal advice across corporate/commercial, procurement, employment, intellectual property, privacy, AML/ATF and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts, agreements, procurement documents, policies and other legal instruments.
  • Identify legal risks, advise on compliance obligations and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
  • Support internal stakeholders through timely, business-oriented legal advice and file management.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and support updates to policies, templates and practices.
  • Collaborate with business units and external counsel to support organizational objectives while managing legal risk.

Job description

The Mint is hiring a Legal Counsel who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Reporting to the Director & Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Services, the Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advisory services in the area of corporate commercial law, including contract drafting, procurement, regulatory compliance, and other matters supporting the Mint’s commercial and operational activities.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Provide practical legal advice across corporate/commercial, procurement, employment, intellectual property, privacy, AML/ATF and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts, agreements, procurement documents, policies and other legal instruments.
  • Identify legal risks, advise on compliance obligations and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
  • Support internal stakeholders through timely, business-oriented legal advice and file management.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and support updates to policies, templates and practices.
  • Collaborate with business units and external counsel to support organizational objectives while managing legal risk.

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring on-site presence at our Ottawa location three to five days per week, depending on meeting requirements and other activities.

Languages Requirements:

Proficiency in both official languages (English / French) is required at the time of hire. If no qualified candidate fully meets the required levels, other candidate language profiles may be considered in accordance with the Mint’s Staffing Policy. The linguistic profile for this position is:

Education & Designation:

  • University degree in law from a recognized university in Canada.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7–10 years of experience in the practice of law, with demonstrated expertise in a few of the following areas: public procurement, commercial law, labour law, regulatory/compliance law and contract drafting.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of corporate/commercial law, contract law, regulatory compliance, and the legal principles applicable to the Mint’s business and operational activities, with experience in public procurement law and related trade agreements considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft, review, negotiate and advise on contracts, agreements, procurement documents, policies, legal opinions, briefing notes and other legal instruments.
  • Working knowledge of labour and employment, intellectual property, privacy, AML/ATF, legislative, policy and other legal advisory matters relevant to Legal Services.
  • Strong analytical, research, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to identify legal issues, assess risks and provide practical, business-oriented advice and mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to synthesize legal, policy, business and operational information and provide clear oral and written advice that balances legal requirements, client objectives, organizational interests and risk management considerations.
  • Ability to manage client relationships, competing priorities and workload to ensure timely, effective and high-quality delivery of legal services.
  • Ability to collaborate with, guide and coordinate the work of less experienced counsel, Legal Researcher & Technician, articling students and legal support staff, as required.
  • Experience advising a Crown corporation, government entity or regulated organization is considered an asset.
