Job summary

BHP is seeking a Lead Risk Management professional based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. This hybrid role oversees risk governance across the Jansen Potash Project portfolio and leads a team of risk professionals to drive proactive identification, assessment, and mitigation of project risks.

You will partner with project leaders to ensure safe, sustainable and value-driven outcomes, while embedding BHP’s risk framework and promoting continuous improvement across programs and portfolios.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience as a risk management practitioner within large-scale projects, major infrastructure, mining, construction or related industries.
• Demonstrated experience leading a risk management function and developing high-performing teams.
• Strong project management knowledge across the full lifecycle.
• Advanced expertise in risk management frameworks, methodologies, systems and risk assessment techniques.
• Strong capability in project risk analysis, governance, controls assurance and risk reporting.
• Experience supporting portfolio management, investment prioritization and business decision making.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation and presentation skills.
• Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance safety, value, risk and outcomes.
• Collaborative leadership style with coaching and inclusion.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team responsible for project and portfolio risk management, governance, and assurance activities.
• Facilitate risk assessment methodologies, tools and techniques to identify and manage project risks.
• Provide guidance on risk management practices and strengthen risk controls and mitigation strategies.
• Monitor and report on project risk performance to support safe delivery and budget performance.
• Partner with stakeholders to support risk-informed decision making and manage interconnected risks.
• Establish and govern risk management standards across programs and portfolios.
• Conduct portfolio benchmarking and support project prioritization and decisions.
• Facilitate workshops and risk reviews to engage stakeholders and drive action.
• Promote a risk-aware culture and continuous improvement in risk practice.

The Challenge Ahead

As Lead Risk Management, you will play a critical leadership role in supporting the successful delivery of one of Canada’s most significant mining and infrastructure developments.
Leading a team of risk professionals, you will drive project and portfolio risk governance, assurance, and risk management practices across the project lifecycle. You will work closely with project leaders and stakeholders to identify opportunities, manage uncertainty, strengthen decision making, and help deliver safe, sustainable, and value‑focused outcomes.
This is an opportunity for an experienced risk management professional who enjoys partnering across complex project environments, influencing senior stakeholders, developing high‑performing teams, and building a strong risk‑aware culture. You will contribute directly to project performance by ensuring risks are proactively identified, assessed, mitigated, and communicated while supporting strategic investment and delivery decisions.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Lead and develop a team responsible for project and portfolio risk management, governance, and assurance activities.
• Facilitate the application of risk assessment methodologies, tools, and techniques to identify, analyse, and manage project risks across the lifecycle.
• Provide expert guidance on risk management practices and challenge project teams to strengthen risk controls and mitigation strategies.
• Monitor and report on project risk performance, supporting safe delivery, schedule integrity, budget performance, and project outcomes.
• Partner with project and business stakeholders to support risk‑informed decision making and effective management of emerging and interconnected risks.
• Establish and govern risk management standards, practices, and review processes across programs and portfolios.
• Conduct portfolio benchmarking, identify key investment drivers, and support project prioritization and portfolio decision making.
• Facilitate workshops, presentations, and risk reviews that engage stakeholders and enable meaningful discussion and action.
• Promote a strong risk‑aware culture by embedding BHP’s risk framework and encouraging continuous learning and improvement.
• Support the delivery of safe, sustainable, customer‑focused outcomes while driving operational excellence and value creation.

What You'll Bring to the Role

You are an experienced leader with a strong background in project risk management and a proven ability to influence outcomes within complex project or portfolio environments.

You will bring:

• Extensive experience as a risk management practitioner within large‑scale projects, major infrastructure, engineering, resources, mining, construction, or related industries.
• Demonstrated experience leading a risk management function and developing high‑performing teams.
• Strong project management knowledge and an understanding of project delivery across the full lifecycle.

The following qualifications would be considered advantageous:

• Formal Project Management qualification such as PMP or equivalent.

Work Location

This position is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and supports the Jansen Potash Project portfolio. Working hours are 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
