Lead Electrician

Position Number: S00541

Location: Kelowna

Division/Portfolio: Facilities Management

Department/Program: Operations

Schedule: Monday to Friday; 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Salary: $75,403 annually

Appointment Type: Full-time Regular

This role is under the direction of the Manager, Operations and Energy Systems. The Lead Electrician supervises and assigns work orders, performs electrical installations, maintenance and repairs on related building systems and equipment in accordance with Canadian Electrical Code, BC Safety Authority Regulations, Worksafe BC, BC Fire Code and BC Building Code. The position involves maintaining electrical inventory, recommending system and equipment upgrades, ensuring compliance with safety codes, and performing related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  1. Prioritizes, assigns and supervises work orders for staff electricians and monitors task completion, ensuring safe and efficient repairs in accordance with WSBC regulations.
  2. Acts as Field Safety Representative under the BC Safety Authority, consulting on code compliance and project design.
  3. Recommends projects or systems requiring repair or upgrade, assists in project preparation, and provides technical oversight of electrical work.
  4. Reviews progress of activities with the Operations Manager, identifies deficiencies, and makes priority and corrective action recommendations.
  5. Installs, repairs, troubleshoots and maintains electrical distribution systems, motor control centres, switchgear, fire systems, lighting systems, appliances, motors, and related control systems.
  6. Maintains system records, such as log books, fire system verification records, generator tests records, and other necessary records.
  7. Implements, coordinates, schedules and maintains a computerized work order system and preventive maintenance program.
  8. Repairs and maintains Building Management control systems and computerized lighting systems.
  9. Maintains fire protection systems, conducts annual inspections and tests per BC Fire Code.
  10. Assists in maintaining electrical inventory.
  11. Performs emergency and standby duties as required.
  12. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus trades training to Electrical Journeyman status.
  • Field Safety Representative – FSR Class B certificate as a minimum.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Over 8 years of progressive experience, including 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, ability to work in a team environment.
  • Commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • In‑depth knowledge of electrical and safety regulations, standards, methods and practices.
  • Significant experience with institutional building electrical systems.
  • Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, experience with electronics such as BMS, fire alarm, security systems, emergency lighting.
  • Ability to set up electrical maintenance programs, read and interpret drawings and specifications, and prioritize workload.
  • Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Physical Demands
  • Work both indoors and outdoors across multiple campus locations.
  • Occasional heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in confined spaces, at heights, with periods of bending and awkward positions.
  • Use of ladders and mobile lifting devices.
  • Wear personal protective equipment.
  • Overtime hours may be required.
