Job summary

Sunspace Sunrooms is seeking an experienced Lead Carpenter in Newcastle, Ontario to lead framing projects and coordinate a team of installers. The role requires strong framing skills, a solid grasp of the Ontario Building Code, and the ability to guide others toward high-quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of carpentry experience, with significant wood framing work.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code for framing and structural construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and work with a team of installers to meet project goals.
  • Plan, coordinate and assign daily work based on production or project needs.
  • Complete framing according to drawings, specs and building codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and measurements accurately.
  • Ensure work complies with the Ontario Building Code and company standards.
  • Inspect completed work for accuracy, workmanship and code compliance.
  • Train, coach and support team members in carpentry and framing techniques.

Position Overview

Sunspace is seeking an experienced and dependable Lead Carpenter to oversee and participate in framing and construction projects. The successful candidate will have strong framing experience, practical knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, and the ability to lead a team while maintaining high standards for quality, productivity, and workplace safety.

This is a hands-on leadership position suited to someone who can interpret drawings, organize daily work, solve construction-related issues, and provide clear direction to employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and work alongside a team of installers
  • Plan, coordinate, and assign daily work based on production or project requirements.
  • Complete framing according to drawings, specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and measurements.
  • Ensure work complies with the Ontario Building Code and company quality standards.
  • Inspect completed work for accuracy, workmanship, and code compliance.
  • Identify construction or design concerns and recommend practical solutions.
  • Train, coach, and support team members in proper carpentry and framing techniques.
  • Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, and adherence to procedures.
  • Ensure materials, tools, and equipment are used properly and efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Enforce health and safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Communicate project progress, material requirements, delays, and concerns to management.
  • Assist with material takeoffs and ensure required materials are available.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years of carpentry experience, with significant experience in wood framing.
  • Previous experience leading, supervising, or mentoring a construction or production team.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, particularly requirements relating to framing and structural construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to accurately measure, calculate, lay out, cut, assemble, and install structural components.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation may be required.
  • Carpentry Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience in modular construction or a manufacturing environment is considered an asset.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical work for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working with power tools, ladders, and construction equipment.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and workplace conditions.
