Job summary

Alberta Precision Laboratories in Edmonton is seeking a Laboratory Technologist I – Molecular Genetics to perform manual and automated procedures, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, and NGS, ensuring accurate results.

The role requires MLT program completion and active or eligible CMLTA registration, strong organization, data entry, quality control, and the ability to train others while maintaining meticulous records in a regulated environment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
  • Understanding of molecular theory, quality control, LIS systems (Epic Beaker, Cerner Millennium) and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples.
  • Perform routine and specialized procedures in specimen processing for diagnosis, treatment and research.
  • Enter and verify patient results; maintain records and documentation with high attention to detail.
  • Assist with training of new staff and students; participate in quality control activities.

Laboratory Technologist I - Molecular Genetics

As part of a team, the Laboratory Technologist I – Molecular Genetics will perform a variety of manual and automated procedures proficiently to produce accurate and timely results in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory within the Edmonton Zone of Alberta Precision Laboratories. Specialized techniques include nucleic acid extraction, DNA quantification, DNA sequencing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, allelic discrimination, fragment analysis, and next generation sequencing (NGS). The successful candidate will be required to perform data entry, routine maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of various laboratory instruments. In addition, maintaining legible and accurate records in a well-organized manner; enter and verify patient results as required; assist with training of new employees and students in Molecular Genetics techniques; participating in quality control activities; and have the ability to work with a high level of attention to detail in a challenging work environment.

Required Qualifications:

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must have an understanding of molecular theory, quality control, instrumentation, laboratory information systems (LIS), specifically Epic Beaker and Cerner Millennium, and lab accreditation requirements. Must have the ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately for timely resolution. Proven effective time management and strong organizational skills are required. Your communication and interpersonal skills must enable you to build and maintain relationships, facilitate teamwork, resolve conflict, and manage change. Proficiency with Windows based computer applications, including Microsoft Office programs and mathematical calculations is required. Must be able to represent Alberta Precision Laboratories, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services, in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.
