Job summary

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a Clinical Genetics Technologist I to join the Genetics and Genomics North team at U of A Hospital in Edmonton. The role involves processing samples for chromosome analysis, performing FISH, and creating annotated karyograms for cancer and other cases.

Requires a Bachelor's degree with advanced genetics credentials and registration with CMLTA. Regular part-time (0.80 FTE) in a busy clinical cytogenetics/molecular genetics lab.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.
  • Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
  • Work experience in a clinical Cytogenetics and/or clinical Molecular Genetics laboratory required.
  • Current clinical laboratory experience and knowledge in these techniques is preferred.
  • Attention to detail, aptitude and proficiency in manual and automated techniques is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques.
  • Participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS) and report generation.
  • Quality control, proficiency testing, and lab safety procedures.
  • Maintain lab equipment and supplies; training of students and fellows/residents.
  • Participate in accreditation activities and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.

Clinical Genetics Technologist I - Cytogenetics

As a genetic technologist, your discerning eye, analytical mind, and critical thinking skills help doctors, patients, and families get the information they need identify, treat, and make decisions about genetic diseases or disorders.Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is currently seeking a Genetics Technologist I to join the Genetics and Genomics team at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). As the Genetics Technologist I, you will provide technical expertise and perform both routine and specialized work processing patient samples for chromosome analysis in the Edmonton Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory. In this role, you will execute specific diagnostic procedures including preparation and culturing of peripheral bloods, amniotic fluids, chorionic villus specimens, bone marrow aspirates and solid tissues. Possessing previous experience and specialized skills in molecular cytogenetic techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), you will be responsible for casework involving chromosome and microscope FISH analysis, interpretation, and digitally capturing these images, making the final preparation and annotation of karyograms, including complex Cancer Cytogenetic cases.A top-rated teaching and learning hospital and national leader for health sciences, research, and innovation, UAH provides exceptional care to some of the most complex, critically ill patients in Canada. As a Clinical Genetics Technologist (CGT) I, you will perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques according to established procedures. You will also participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing. Other duties include but are not limited to maintaining lab equipment and supplies, training students and fellows/residents, participating in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Successful completion of the Genetics Technology Graduate Diploma Program through the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences (Toronto, Ontario) OR the Clinical Genetics Technology Post Diploma Program at the BC Institute of Technology (Burnaby, BC) OR equivalent. Work experience in a clinical Cytogenetics and/or clinical Molecular Genetics laboratory required. Current clinical laboratory experience and knowledge in these techniques is preferred. Attention to detail, aptitude and proficiency in manual and automated techniques is required. The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve these is required. Ability to do advanced maintenance with minimal supervision is an asset. Must have the ability to operate Windows.
