Job summary

Alberta Health Services is recruiting for Laboratory Assistant I – Inpatient Collections at the University of Alberta Hospital. You will perform high-quality blood collection services to support critical diagnostics and patient care as part of a collaborative healthcare team.

Shifts rotate days, evenings and nights to support 24/7 operations. The role requires physical activity, including lifting up to 10 lbs, and adherence to safety and quality protocols.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
  • Recent phlebotomy experience within the last 6 months.
  • Recent experience in using Rover within the last 6 months.
  • Completion of EPIC Connect Care Training - Medical Lab Assistant w/ Result Entry.

Responsibilities

  • Procure, handle, process, dispatch and test specimens.
  • Perform phlebotomy on adult patients and assist with specimen collection.
  • Receive and sort specimens and prepare them for transport.
  • Ensure quality control and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Laboratory Assistant I - Inpatient Collections

Make a meaningful impact every day as a phlebotomist in the Inpatient Collections at the University of Alberta Hospital, where you'll be a key member of a collaborative healthcare team. Working closely with specialized units, physicians, and other providers, you’ll perform high-quality blood collection services that support critical diagnostics and patient care. This role is primarily focused on adult collections, with future opportunities for specialized pediatric training to expand your scope and expertise. This is an active role that involves frequent walking, bending and wrist manipulation during phlebotomy procedures. In this role youwill have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, patient-centered setting where attention to detail, professionalism, and compassion are essential. Your strong attention to detail and time management skills will flourish as you receive and sort specimens into the lab and prepare them for transport as well as ensuring quality control and maintenance of lab equipment. With these responsibilities, you will be required to push and pull phlebotomy carts up to 10 lbs of dynamic force and lift up to 10 lbs of inventory. This role offers shifts that rotate through days, evenings and nights to support our 24/7 operations. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous student experience at UAH Inpatient Collections within the last 6-12 months.
