Job summary

LifeLabs LP in Barrie, Ontario seeks a Lab Patient Technician to handle the specimen collection process from greeting patients to preparation for transportation. This casual, on-site role involves phlebotomy, Holter monitor connections, ECG tracings, and documenting special test collections.

You will maintain patient privacy, ensure protocol adherence, and support multiple shifts with ASAP start. Union involvement applies under OPSEU Barrie.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent is preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience is an asset and patient interaction is key.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients, collect required information, explain the specimen collection process and ensure test protocol is followed.
• Perform phlebotomies, connect/disconnect holter monitors, and perform ECG tracings.
• Collect special test specimens (drug screens, paternity tests, clinical trials) and complete required documentation.
• Maintain client relationships and respond to inquiries; follow up on requests.
• Enter patient demographics and requisition data accurately for processing results.
• Prepare specimens for transportation and testing.

Job description

As a Lab Patient Technician,you will be responsible for the specimen collection process, from greeting patients through to preparation of specimens for transportation. This is an important role in patient care and our business and will let you see the difference that you make in patients’ lives.

The successful candidate must be available to work Monday to Saturday between the hours of 6:00 am - 6:30 pm. Please note that flexibility in availability is essential for this role and your shift location can change based on operational needs.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Greet and request required information from patients, explain the specimen collection process, and ensure patients have followed necessary test protocol prior to specimen collection.
• Perform phlebotomies, connect/disconnect holter monitors, and perform ECG tracings.
• Perform special test collections, such as medical/legal drug screens, paternity tests, and clinical trials, and complete related documentation.
• Maintain client relationships, including responding to inquiries and following up on requests.
• Complete data entry of required patient demographics, requisition information, and other information related to processing test results.
• Prepare specimens for transportation and testing.

What you will bring to the role:

• Graduate of an approved Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent are preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience is an asset.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Good computer skills with a minimum typing speed of 40 wpm.
• Strong customer/patient service with the ability to relate to patients and clients even in stressful situations
• Strong empathy, flexibility, adaptability to change, and problem solving skills
• Ability to maintain the strictest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality.
