Job Summary:



The Lab Director oversees the proper functioning of School of Science laboratories, including supervision of program and departmental laboratory support staff. Responsible for coordination of safety efforts with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer. Responsible for professional development of staff, hiring of student lab assistants and placing and receiving orders for supplies in coordination with laboratory support staff. Responsible for inventory control.



Minimum Qualifications:




  • Master's degree in physical or natural sciences

  • 3 - 5 years' experience in lab management

  • Effective written and oral communication skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel



Essential Functions:




  • Processes orders for laboratory materials and compiles major pre-semester orders for Dean's approval. Receives, verifies and distributes incoming lab shipments, approves payments, maintains organized lab purchasing records, acts as liaison between the School of Science (SOS), the University Purchasing/Business Offices and vendors.

  • Coordinates SOS student laboratory assistant employment and safety training for instructional and research activities. Prepares semester student labor cost projection for Dean's approval.

  • In collaboration with laboratory support staff, maintain inventory of SOS chemicals, equipment and instrumentation.

  • In collaboration with laboratory support staff, ensures routine maintenance and repairs of equipment and instrumentation.

  • Acts as a liaison with Mechanical Services, reports on HVAC, plumbing and other laboratory infrastructure problems.

  • Supervises laboratory support staff including providing professional development and conducting annual evaluations and resolving personnel issues.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Preferred Qualifications:




  • Doctoral/Advanced degree in physical or natural sciences

  • Proficient in database management using software

  • Familiar with NY state and federal lab safety guidelines as they pertain to higher ed

  • Tuition Benefits:

    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.

    • University pays 100% tuition only.

    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.
