Job summary

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) is hiring a Casual Kitchen Helper at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School in Ottawa. The role supports the kitchen operations under supervision, including food prep, service, and supervising students.

Monday through Friday, up to 7.5 hours daily in a casual, as-needed basis. The position requires a secondary school diploma with a culinary focus and at least one year of relevant experience, plus knowledge of food safety and ability to operate

Qualifications

• Knowledge of specifications for industry food products and practices and health and safety acts/regulations
• Ability to operate and maintain kitchen equipment listed
• Interpersonal and communication skills to train and supervise students
• Report student problems to the classroom teacher when necessary
• Cash handling and basic math for purchases and change
• Assist with inventory and ordering of food supplies
• Secondary school diploma with culinary arts specialization and minimum 1 year relevant experience

Casual Kitchen Helper

Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School

Position Status: Casual (as-needed basis)

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, up to 7.5 hours daily between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:00 pm

Salary: $22.57 per hour + 4% in lieu of vacation

Under the direction of the Chef/Food Services Manager/Cafeteria Supervisor/Assistant Chef, the Kitchen Helper carries out a variety of duties to maintain the kitchen work areas, equipment, utensils and storage areas; assist with the preparation and serving of food as directed; assist with the supervision of students.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of specifications for industry food products and practices, and commercial food preparation, as well as health and safety acts and regulations;
• Ability to operate/maintain slicer, buffalo chopper, grinder, grill, grater, ovens including convection, deep fryer, steam table, gas stove, floor mixer, pressure cooker, blenders, variety of butcher knives, dishwasher;
• Interpersonal and communication skills using tact and diplomacy to train/monitor/motivate/coach students and mentor in the safe and proper use of kitchen equipment, proper hygiene and food preparation;
• Report student problems to the classroom teacher when necessary;
• Respond with tact and diplomacy to client needs, explain processes, relevant regulations;
• Assist the classroom teacher with kitchen equipment and food inventories, communicating with suppliers;
• Organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks, plan activities, meet daily deadlines; mathematical skills related to money to accept cash and give change;
• Competency in learning how to use equipment related to electronic payment for purchases including debit and credit;
• Assist with inventory and ordering of food supplies as directed with associated food service providers.
• This knowledge is acquired through successful completion of a secondary school diploma specializing in culinary arts with a minimum of one year of relevant experience.
