Job summary

Nisga’a School District No. 92 is seeking a K–12 Itinerant Student Counsellor to support students across Nisga’a schools. Travel between campuses is required, with a focus on social‑emotional wellbeing, mental health, and resilience through collaborative, culturally responsive counselling practices.

The role involves partnerships with families and community agencies, participation in school teams, and ongoing professional learning to enhance district counselling services.

Qualifications

  • Valid teaching certificate or eligibility to work as a School Counsellor.
  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, School Counselling, or related field.
  • Experience providing counselling to children and youth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counselling services to K–12 students (individual, small group, preventative).
  • Support student social‑emotional wellbeing and mental health.
  • Collaborate with school teams to address behavioural, emotional, or attendance challenges.
  • Participate in school-based meetings and coordinated planning.
  • Partner with families to support wellbeing and learning engagement.
  • Collaborate with Nisga’a Valley Health Authority, Nisga’a Children and Family Services, and other partners.
  • Contribute to crisis response and safety planning.
  • Maintain documentation and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Engage in professional learning to strengthen counselling services district-wide.

Position Overview

The Nisga’a School District is seeking a K–12 Itinerant Student Counsellor to support students across Nisga’a schools. The Student Counsellor works within relationship‑centred, community‑connected learning environments and contributes to reconciliation through respectful, culturally responsive counselling practices that support student wellbeing. Working collaboratively with school‑based teams, families, and community partners, the role focuses on promoting social‑emotional wellbeing, mental health, and student resilience across the district. This is an itinerant position that requires regular travel between schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide counselling services to students across K–12, including individual, small‑group, and preventative programming
  • Support student social‑emotional wellbeing, mental health, and positive coping strategies
  • Collaborate with school teams to support students experiencing behavioural, emotional, or attendance‑related challenges
  • Participate in school‑based team meetings and contribute to coordinated planning and student support
  • Work in partnership with families to support student wellbeing and engagement in learning
  • Collaborate with partner agencies and service providers, including Nisga’a Valley Health Authority, Nisga’a Children and Family Services, Provincial School Outreach, and other community partners
  • Contribute to crisis response, safety planning, and student support as required
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and adhere to ethical and professional standards of practice
  • Engage in professional learning and collaborative practices that strengthen counselling services across the district
Required Qualifications
  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate and eligibility to work as a School Counsellor
  • Legally permitted to work in Canada
  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, School Counselling, or a related field
  • Training and experience providing counselling services to children and youth
  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed, strength‑based, and culturally responsive counselling practices
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence and ability to travel between schools within the district
Preferred Attributes
  • Experience providing counselling services across elementary and secondary school settings
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development and mental health
  • Ability to build trusting, respectful relationships with students, families, and school teams
  • Experience collaborating with community agencies and external service providers
  • Strong communication, organization, and case‑management skills
  • Socially responsive and culturally respectful approach to student wellbeing
  • Commitment to teamwork, professional learning, and reflective practice
