Job summary

Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) is seeking an Investigator in the Professional Conduct and Regulatory Affairs department to handle complaints about dentists’ care and conduct. The role involves collecting information, interviewing witnesses, and coordinating with experts to prepare cases for the Registrar and ICR Committee.

You will work in a fast-paced environment, manage investigations with administrative support, and report to the Team Lead/Senior Dental Consultant.

Qualifications

• Completion of a university degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Being a Regulated Health Professional, LLB or equivalent is an asset.

Job description

The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) is a leader in health care regulation. Bring your excellent investigative and communication skills to our team as an Investigator in the College’s Professional Conduct and Regulatory Affairs (PCRA) department.

The PCRA department responds to inquiries from the public about dental concerns, investigates the conduct of dentists, provides support to the College’s Inquiries, Complaints and Reports (ICR) Committee and Discipline Committee in their decision‑making roles, and enforces committee decisions.

You will be responsible for investigating complaints and reports regarding the care and conduct of dentists by collecting relevant information and dental records, interviewing witnesses, attending at dental offices, arranging expert opinions, and compiling records of investigations.

You are an organized self‑starter with excellent oral and written communications skills. You are someone who works well in a demanding fast‑paced environment with a keen eye for detail. You will use knowledge of the profession’s governing legislation to impartially investigate complaints and Registrar’s investigations against Ontario dentists. As part of a team of investigators, you will manage investigations with the support of the department’s administrative staff. Investigations are presented to the College’s ICR Committee for review and decision‑making. This role reports to the Team Lead/Senior Dental Consultant, Investigations.

This is a single vacancy, anticipated to be a 12+ months contract. This role will require the successful candidate to work onsite at our Toronto office occasionally as needed.

At this time, we are only considering candidates located in Ontario or who are willing to relocate.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the Team Lead/ Senior Dental Consultant, you will:

• Investigate complaints and reports which may involve: responding to inquiries from parties, interviewing witnesses, requesting records and information from various sources, analyzing information, obtaining expert opinions and preparing matters for the Registrar and/or the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee
• Manage case files using the College’s electronic case management system to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the process and to adhere to legislated requirements and timelines
• Review records of investigation (ROIs) and disclosure of investigation materials to parties
• Represent the College with external stakeholders, including at the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, as required
• Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives
• Travel within Ontario may be required
• Other duties as assigned

What skills and background do I need?

The Investigator requires:

• Completion of a university degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience; being a Regulated Health Professional, LLB or equivalent is an asset
• Demonstrated experience and training with various investigative techniques and superior investigation skills
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to synthesize and present information in an objective and neutral manner
• Proven ability to manage difficult situations and demonstrate tact, discretion, and sensitivity
• Superior verbal and written communication skills and ability to professionally engage a variety of stakeholders

• Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), related legislation, and administrative tribunal procedures is an asset
• Experience with trauma‑informed approaches is an asset
• Knowledge of dental practice operations is an asset
• RCDSO is building its bilingual (French/English) capacity and excellent French language proficiency is an asset

Compensation and Total Rewards

• Base annual hiring salary from $104,159 to $117,178.20, commensurate with experience
