Qualifications

  • 8+ years of mineral land admin and contract experience, incl. Saskatchewan assets.
  • Strong understanding of Saskatchewan Crown and Freehold leases, tenure rules, and gov processes.
  • Ability to review mineral land agreements and translate terms into system records.
  • Technical knowledge of survey plans, wellbore allocations, drilling spacing units, and royalties.
  • Experience with land due diligence, data-room reviews, conveyancing, and post-closing integration.
  • Capable of working independently with competing priorities and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with partners, regulators, and internal teams.
  • Administer Saskatchewan mineral tenure including leases, continuations and expiries.
  • Prepare and track third-party IONs, ROFRs, and other contractual obligations.
  • Review titles for mineral land and contracts, identifying encumbrances and risks.
  • Resolve disputes related to rentals and royalties; perform chain of title work.
  • Support land due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures, including closing and post-closing integration.
  • Coordinate with accounting to reflect well status and royalty changes.
  • Draft and maintain mineral land agreements and amendments.
  • Maintain CS Explorer records for interests and royalties.
  • Identify process improvements to enhance land group efficiencies.

Job description

West Lake Energy Corp. is a privately owned, intermediate producer with core assets located in the central Alberta and Saskatchewan areas. West Lake’s strategy is to grow its production base in both its heavy and medium areas through organic drilling complemented with focused acquisitions. West Lake has applied advanced drilling and completion techniques, which has allowed its wells to achieve compelling economic returns at sustained low oil prices. West Lake continues to execute on a material multi-year drilling program.

We are currently recruiting for a full-time Intermediate Mineral Land Analyst in our Calgary Office, reporting to the head of the Land Department. The role will primarily support West Lake’s Saskatchewan assets and will include both mineral land administration and contract related functions. This role offers a wide range of accountabilities and the ability to work within a highly engaged team of experts.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with partners, regulators and internal departments including operations, accounting, production, geology, geophysics, and engineering.
  • Administer Saskatchewan Crown and Freehold mineral tenure, including lease issuance and maintenance, continuations, expiries, rentals, commitments, obligations, and related regulatory submissions.
  • Collaborate with members of asset teams and external working interest partners to prepare, process, and track third-party IONs, ROFRs, commitments, obligations, and other contractual requirements.
  • Conduct Crown and Freehold mineral & contract title reviews for proposed drilling locations; identify deficiencies, encumbrances, tenure risks, and required remedies.
  • Complete complicated mineral & contract projects such as evaluating and resolving disputes with third parties concerning rental and royalty payments; including detailed chain of title work on antiquated contracts.
  • Support acquisitions and divestitures through land due diligence, data-room review, preparation and verification of land schedules, conveyancing, closing, and post-closing integration.
  • Liaise monthly with accounting to ensure wellbore working interest, royalty information or well status changes/revisions are reflected correctly.
  • Draft, review, interpret, and maintain mineral land agreements and associated contracts, including production allocation agreements, assignments and conveyances, amendments, consents, joint-interest governance documents, and ancillary agreements in support of drilling, operations, and A&D.
  • Analyze and maintain mineral land and contract records in CS Explorer to ensure internal and third-party working interests, royalties, obligations, and key dates are complete and accurate for ongoing development.
  • Identify, develop, and implement process and procedural enhancements to continually improve efficiencies within the land group.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Land Administration Diploma/Certificate or equivalent experience in the role.
  • Minimum 8+ years of mineral land administration and contract experience, including direct experience with Saskatchewan assets.
  • Demonstrates an exemplary understanding of Saskatchewan Crown and Freehold mineral leases, mineral land agreements, Crown tenure requirements, and applicable provincial legislation, regulations, and government processes.
  • Thorough understanding of concepts pertaining to conventional oil and gas exploration including strong technical skills and experience with reviewing and interpreting survey plans, wellbore production allocations, drilling spacing units and subsequent royalty calculations.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and interpret mineral land agreements and translate contractual terms into accurate system records and action items.
  • Proficiency in the following programs and databases: CS Explorer, geoSCOUT, Pandell AFE, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, ETS, IRIS, ISC, Spin II, AbaData, DDS and OneStop.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
ASSETS
  • Experience with A&D procedures and administration, including due diligence, land schedules, conveyancing, and post-closing integration.
  • Understanding of surface land documents, processes, and procedures as they relate to mineral land and well administration.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment while demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines with little supervision, in a team-oriented environment.
  • Membership with CAPLA and/or CAPL.
