Job summary

Thurber Engineering Ltd. is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Cambridge, with opportunities across Oakville, Ottawa, Pickering or St. Catharines, Ontario. You will work on diverse geotechnical projects and develop under senior mentorship.

We value strong analytical skills, project management and effective client communication, with an emphasis on independent work and collaboration within a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of relevant Geotechnical experience.
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEO, or eligible for immediate registration.
  • Knowledge of Ontario geology and landforms, terrain assessments, and geotechnical instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Project management of geotechnical projects.
  • Conduct field drilling programs, construction monitoring or instrumentation programs.
  • Geotechnical analyses of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response using software.
  • Prepare proposals, fee estimates, and technical reports directed by the Geotechnical Lead/Manager.
  • Coordinate and conduct forensic and field investigation programs.
  • Supervise technologists and junior engineers; provide technical direction.
  • Support geotechnical practice and manage client relationships including business development.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Progressively engage with clients.

Overview

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Cambridge, Oakville, Ottawa, Pickering or St. Catharines, Ontario.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

As our Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Project management of geotechnical projects;
  • Conduct field drilling programs, construction monitoring or instrumentation programs relating to geotechnical projects;
  • Geotechnical analyses of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response, utilizing a suite of software routines;
  • Prepare and write proposals, fee estimates, and technical reports as directed by the Geotechnical Team Lead / Manager;
  • Coordinate and conduct forensic and field investigation programs;
  • Supervise the work of technologists and junior engineers and provide technical direction;
  • Promote and assist Thurber in supporting the geotechnical practice, and managing client relationships, including business and new client development;
  • Mentoring and development of junior staff; and,
  • Progressive interaction with clients.

Qualifications and Assets

  • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical Engineering field and an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering;
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEO, or eligible for immediate registration;
  • A general understanding of Ontario geology and associated landforms, processes, and hazards;
  • The ability to conduct desktop and field level terrain assessments;
  • Strong understanding of rock and soil mechanics;
  • Familiarity with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring of geohazards;
  • Experience involving 2D and 3D geotechnical software packages, such as RocScience, Plaxis and/or GeoStudio;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Exceptional analytical and project management skills;
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team in various environments;
  • Prior experience in consulting engineering or construction is considered an asset; and,

Base Salary Range

  • $90,000 - $125,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
  • The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
  • The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
  • Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
