College of the North Atlantic seeks an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator instructor for the Bay St. George Campus in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Qualifications

  • Interprovincial Journeyperson Certification (Red Seal) in Heavy Equipment Operator (Excavator) AND Heavy Equipment Operator (Tractor Loader - Backhoe (TLB)), AND Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer) with a minimum of six years combined apprenticeship training and recent related trade-specific industry experience.
  • In lieu of all three Red Seal certifications, at least one certification with six years of apprenticeship training and related industry experience may be considered.
  • If lacking full Red Seal certifications, a Blue Seal in at least one of the areas with six years of related experience may be acceptable.

Salary Information

Salary will be determined in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, based on the candidate's education and experience.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Facilitate learning to students as part of the Heavy Equipment Operator program.
  • Deliver theory and practical components (in-class and field-site training) of all courses outlined in the Plan of Training of the Heavy Equipment Operator trade.
  • Incorporate their own teaching style to existing lesson plans while meeting the learning objectives of the course material.
  • Work with other faculty members to ensure a coordinated and consistent teaching approach to ensure the planned curriculum for each course is delivered.
  • Prepare and implement various instructional strategies, techniques, and learning modules using an approved curriculum to achieve specified learning outcomes.
  • Utilize and advocate for the use of technology to advance teaching and learning.
  • Establish student performance objectives and evaluation methods.
  • Administer various assessments.
  • Meet with students regularly to gauge and evaluate progress.
  • Set a professional example and communicate effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and provide an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom discipline following college policies and procedures.
  • Identify and resolve problem areas in learning.
  • Provide academic advising to students.
  • Participate in professional development activities, maintain currency, and strive for excellence in instructional practices and the trade.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to accreditation activities to ensure the program is of the highest standard.
  • Other related duties consistent with providing and maintaining quality student-centered instruction will be required.

Screening Criteria
  • Interprovincial Journeyperson Certification (Red Seal) in Heavy Equipment Operator (Excavator) AND Heavy Equipment Operator (Tractor Loader - Backhoe (TLB)), AND Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer) with a minimum of six years combined apprenticeship training and recent related trade-specific industry experience.
  • In lieu of candidates possessing all three Interprovincial Journeyperson Certifications (Red Seals) in the above-noted areas, consideration will be given to candidates who possess at least one of these three certifications with a minimum of six years combined apprenticeship training and recent related trade-specific industry experience (see condition of employment for candidates who meet this criteria).
  • In lieu of candidates possessing an Interprovincial Journeyperson Certification (Red Seal) in either of the above-noted areas, consideration may also be given to candidates who possess a Blue Seal in at least one of these three certifications with a minimum of six years combined apprenticeship training and recent related trade-specific industry experience (see condition of employment for candidates who meet this criteria).

  • Ability to foster and deliver a positive student learning experience.

Conditions of Offer
  • When requested by the Employer, a recent and satisfactory Certificate of Conduct must be provided.
  • Verification of credentials and applicable licenses, certifications, and/or professional memberships as required for the position.
    • Credentials obtained outside of Canada will require an evaluation to determine their Canadian educational equivalency. This evaluation must support the educational requirements for the position.
Conditions of Acceptance
  • Acknowledges the requirement for participating in ongoing training and professional development, including the completion of courses required for Post-Secondary Instructor Certification as specified for instructors.
  • Acknowledges the requirement for maintaining applicable licenses, certifications, and/or professional memberships as required for the position.
  • Acknowledges that courses may be assigned outside the instructor's regular area of instruction based on their qualifications.
  • As outlined by the Department of Immigration, Population, Growth, and Skills (IPGS), instructors must obtain any missing Interprovincial Journeyperson Certifications (Red Seals) within one year of employment from date of hire to fulfil IPGS' requirements for both theory and practical instruction. The College reserves the right to offer temporary employment until such time this condition is met. Candidates also acknowledge that instructional limitations may be placed on those not in possession of the full suite of Red Seal certifications as required by IPGS until such time this condition is met.
