Job summary

Vancouver Community College (VCC) seeks an educator to teach in an assigned field, develop curriculum, prepare teaching materials, and assess student progress while ensuring stewardship of college facilities and compliance with college policies.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments, and projects.
  • Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials for courses, including audio-visual and web materials.
  • Assesses student progress with papers, tests, exams, and other evaluations; provides detailed feedback.
  • Advises students on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Provides individual or group tutorials or remedial instruction.
  • Maintains stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
  • Arranges and supervises independent/group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.
  • Adheres to VCC policies and maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Participates in departmental and college meetings and may serve on committees regarding budgets, curriculum revision, and course or diploma requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
  • Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
  • Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
  • Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
  • Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
  • Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.
  • Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
AREA HIRING CRITERIA
  • Red Seal Certification in the Electrician trade (required), an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field (preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Five years of academic or professional experience related to the courses offered in the department.
  • Completion of the Provincial Instructor’s Diploma (PID) (preferred).
  • Successful post-secondary teaching experience (preferred).
  • Demonstrated instructional ability.
  • Previous experience working with international students or overseas working experience would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to plan, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Salary: $70.43 - $112.87/hour. Staring salary will be determined by education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement.
