Job summary

British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is seeking a temporary, full‑time Faculty, Electrical to teach apprenticeship courses across Construction and Industrial Electrician streams. The contract is 3 months with potential for long‑term employment after a probationary period.

The role involves lectures, shop and lab instruction, student counseling, and assessment, plus responsibilities for exam marking and curriculum development within the Electrical Trades Department.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years’ current work experience as a journeyperson.
  • Strong command of the English language, written and oral.
  • Field Safety Representative (FSR) certification preferred.
  • Completion of Provincial Instructors Diploma Program preferred.
  • Experience with programming and troubleshooting PLCs is an asset.
  • Hands-on skills in maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach apprenticeship courses (Construction/Industrial Electrician, Electrical Foundation).
  • Prepare and present lectures, shop and lab instruction.
  • Counsel and evaluate students; manage examinations and grading.
  • Handle curriculum development and program enhancements.
  • Ensure resources are available to deliver training and modify workshops.

Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full‑time (1.0 FTE) Faculty, Electrical. The position may lead to long‑term employment after a probationary period; the initial contract is for 3 months.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teaching apprenticeship courses, including Construction Electrician, Industrial Electrician, Electrical Foundation, and part‑time/industry service students.
  • Preparing and presenting classroom lectures, shop, and lab instruction.
  • Providing instructional counseling and evaluation.
  • Managing administrative responsibilities such as examination marking, student evaluation, curriculum development, and program enhancement.
  • Ensuring appropriate resources are available to deliver training.
  • Contributing to modifications of workshop and instructional areas.
  • Performing other duties directly related to the instruction of trades and vocational programs.
  • Collaborating with the Electrical Trades Department Head.
  • Motivating students to learn.
  • Teaching employability skills and assisting with time management.
  • Providing extra effort for struggling students and challenging those who excel.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to teaching excellence and producing outstanding graduates.
Qualifications
  • BC Trades Certificate of Qualification with Inter‑Provincial Red Seal in Construction Electrician and/or Industrial Electrician.
  • A minimum of five years’ current work experience as a journeyperson.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Previous teaching experience is an asset.
  • Experience with programming and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers (PLC) is an asset.
  • Experience with electronics, instrumentation and motor control is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to instruct the entire curriculum from Foundation to Level 4.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and a strong desire to teach.
  • Experience working with apprentices in a supervisory role.
  • Effective command of the English language, both written and oral.
  • Field Safety Representative (FSR) certification is preferred.
  • Completion of the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program is preferred.
  • A proven record of professional development to stay current with new technologies and industry practices and a strong desire to maintain this currency.
  • Good hands‑on skills and experience maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and internet applications, with particular emphasis on spreadsheets and Adobe applications.

Salary

Salary range: $82,891 – $122,857 per annum. Salary is prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
