As a member of the military, Information Systems Technicians are experts in Information Technologies (IT) who deploy, establish, administer, and maintain multi-platform networking computer environments, and a variety of data and voice networks. They are part of a larger team that provides the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world. They handle communications and information systems equipment, such as:
Information Systems Technicians experience the unique adventures and challenges that come with working outdoors, in military vehicles, and server rooms. They work across the country and around the world wherever the CAF has a footprint.
If you join the Regular Force, upon completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first base. While there is some flexibility with postings, accommodations can’t always be guaranteed, and relocation may be necessary. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will do so through a specific Reserve unit, working part-time, typically one night a week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment. Reserve members serve at local units and may volunteer for deployments.
No previous work experience or career-related skills are required. CAF recruiters can help determine if your interests and attributes match this occupation.
The minimum education requirement is the completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Math and Science. Foreign education may be accepted.
The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This physically demanding course covers basic skills and knowledge common to all trades.
Following basic training, Information Systems Technicians attend the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario, for approximately 12 months, learning:
Opportunities exist for specialized skills training through military and civilian courses, including cryptographic equipment, advanced server management, and network security, among others. Career progression may include advanced courses such as Data Network Designer and Leadership Courses.
This position is available part-time with the Primary Reserve at various locations across Canada. Reservists serve in their local community, can serve while studying or working civilian jobs, and may volunteer for deployments. They are paid at 92.8% of Regular Force rates, receive benefits, and can contribute to a pension plan.
