Overview

As members of the military, Air Drop Systems Technicians are the Canadian Forces go-to experts on a wide range of parachute systems and parachute-related equipment. They play a pivotal role in supporting airborne operations for Infantry Parachute Companies, Air Force Aerial Delivery Sections, Special Operations, and Search and Rescue.

As an Air Drop Systems Technician, your responsibilities are diverse and crucial. You will ensure the safety of personnel by meticulously packing and repairing parachutes and related airborne equipment. You will provide technical guidance to commanders and staff, aiding in planning and executing airborne and airdrop operations. Your expertise will be vital for mission success.

While primarily working in a warehouse environment to maintain parachute systems, you will also have the opportunity to participate in field operations and even experience parachute jumps as part of your qualifications. Your duties include:

  • Proficiently pack and maintain a variety of parachute systems, including extraction, cargo, and personnel parachutes.
  • Utilize advanced parachute operation equipment, such as GPS-guided aerial delivery systems.
  • Inspect and maintain sewing machine systems used in parachute upkeep.
  • Support airborne operations and participate in parachuting activities across Canada and internationally.
  • Investigate parachute operation malfunctions.
  • Supervise packing and maintenance of parachute systems and airborne equipment.
  • Maintain parachuting qualifications.
Work Environment

Technicians typically work indoors in temperature-controlled warehouses but also operate in the field to support real-world airborne operations. Responsibilities include reporting on parachute data, conducting repairs, and participating in jumps. The role involves supporting parachuting activities domestically and abroad.

  • Minimum education: Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education may be accepted.
Training

Initial training includes:

  • Basic Military Qualification at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School.
  • 23-week trade training at Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre, covering parachute packing, repairs, and parachutist training.

Further specialized training opportunities include courses such as Basic Para Instructor, Jump Master, and Military Freefall Parachutist, with advanced courses available for qualified personnel.
