Job summary

Russel Metals is hiring a delivery/driver role in Halifax to pick, load, and transport materials matching customer specifications. You will ensure safe handling, perform vehicle inspections, and maintain meticulous logs per policy and regulatory requirements.

The role emphasizes safe operations, adherence to health and safety standards, and teamwork with warehouse staff. Candidates should have Class 1 with Air, 2-3 years of flat-deck experience, and be comfortable with physical work.

Qualifications

  • Clean Class 1 with Air license is required.
  • 2-3 years of experience operating a flat-deck truck.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent education.
  • Ability to perform some heavy lifting.
  • Good math and measurement skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Self-motivated with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Assets: overhead crane experience; forklift experience.

Responsibilities

  • Pick, load and unload material according to customer specifications.
  • Operate the vehicle safely and in compliance with local regulations.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of vehicle and material on board for quality and safety.
  • Maintain records/logs as prescribed by policy.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance of trucks and trailers.
  • Comply with workplace health, safety policies and procedures.
  • Strap and secure materials to ensure safe transportation.

Its network of metals service centers carries an extensive line of metal products in a wide range of sizes, shapes and specifications, including carbon hot rolled and cold finished steel, pipe and tubular products, stainless steel, aluminum and other non-ferrous specialty metals. Its energy field stores carry a specialized product line focused on the needs of energy industry customers. Its steel distributors operations act as master distributors selling steel in large volumes to other steel service centers and large equipment manufacturers mainly on an "as is" basis.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure safe procedures are followed while performing job responsibilities
  • Pick and package material according to customer specifications
  • Load and unload trucks
  • Ensure quality customer service
  • Conduct thorough and effective inspections of vehicle and material on board
  • Comply with workplace policies and procedures (operational and health and safety)
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance of trucks and trailers
  • Perform duties in keeping with the Ministry of Transportation requirements
  • Strap and secure materials to ensure materials are safely transported
  • Operate the vehicle safely and in accordance with local jurisdiction
  • Maintain records/logs as prescribed by the Ministry of Transportation and Company policy
  • Operate company issued electronic and/or communication equipment professionally and respectfully
Skills & Qualifications

Education and Skills Required:

  • Clean Class 1 with Air
  • 2-3 experience operating a flat-deck truck. Steel experience is a strong asset.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Able to perform some heavy lifting
  • Good knowledge of math and measurements
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated, results oriented

Skills considered an asset:

  • Overhead Crane Experience
  • Forklift Experience

Working Conditions

This position is primarily day shift. Occasional call-ins and weekend work may be required and will be compensated as overtime.
