Indigenous Education Counsellor (K-12)

The Delta School District’s Indigenous Education Department is currently hiring a 0.4 FTE Counsellor to provide intervention and prevention services to K–12 students and families with Indigenous ancestry across the district. The successful applicant will report directly to the District Principal of Indigenous Education.

This position requires an understanding that Indigenous families have been—and continue to be—profoundly affected by the intergenerational traumas of colonization, assimilation, residential schools, child welfare involvement, racism, violence, and social inequality.

The Indigenous Education Counsellor promotes personal and social development appropriate to students’ stages of growth and provides counselling support to students, their families, and school communities to foster self-esteem, personal responsibility, decision-making skills, and positive social interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with a small team of Social/Emotional Behaviour Strategists to support K–12 Indigenous students who are experiencing significant emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal challenges.
  • Meet with and observe students requiring additional social-emotional support; provide recommendations for appropriate interventions and strategies.
  • Co-create individualized intervention plans with the Social/Emotional Behaviour Strategists and support school personnel and families in understanding trauma-informed approaches across different environments.
  • Attend School-Based Team (SBT) and CARE Team meetings to identify and address root causes of student difficulties.
  • Collaborate with students’ care teams to debrief challenging incidents, provide an objective lens, advocate for creative supports, and assist school personnel in moving forward using a strength-based, culturally safe approach.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology.
  • Training and experience in strength-based, trauma-informed practices with children and youth experiencing complex social, emotional, mental health, and behavioural needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with students, families, school staff, and community professionals.
  • Knowledge of community-based counselling services within Delta and the Lower Mainland.
  • Experience developing and implementing Success Plans and Safety Plans using trauma-informed, strength-based approaches.
  • Experience with risk assessment practices, such as Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA).
  • Current CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training is an asset.
