City of Chilliwack is seeking an Ice Person III (Casual) to maintain arena ice surfaces and support facility operations. The role involves ice maintenance, general maintenance, and janitorial tasks under supervision, with some independent judgment and shift supervision responsibilities.

Qualifications include Grade 12 or equivalent, Refrigeration Operator Certificate or Power Engineer certification, and Building Services Worker training.

Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Recreation and Culture Department through reliable performance in ice maintenance, general facility maintenance and janitorial tasks, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices. The incumbent in this class will be responsible for performing a variety of ice maintenance, general maintenance and janitorial tasks varying in degree of complexity and responsibility and exercising a certain degree of independent judgement; operating a variety of machinery and equipment such as ice resurfacing machines, ice edgers, and power tools. The incumbent will maintain the Arena ice surfaces in proper condition and assume responsibility for the Refrigeration Plant and related equipment; under general supervision of the Arenas Supervisor II or Arenas Supervisor III. The incumbent will perform regular Refrigeration Plant and facility checks, maintaining required readings, logs and reports. They will perform a variety of tasks such as minor carpentry and plumbing on facilities, maintaining equipment and grounds as directed. They will perform janitorial tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, stripping, cleaning and servicing washrooms; washing windows and surfaces. The incumbent will be required to clear snow; set up and dismantle equipment, fixtures and facilities for special functions, and ensure the security of buildings to which the incumbent is assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for meeting and dealing with the public; being polite, courteous and tactful, providing assistance to the public/users in accordance with established policies. The incumbent in this class will have supervisory responsibilities in absence of a supervisor on shift, such as training and orientating Caretakers, Cashiers, Skate Patrollers and new Ice Persons. In the absence of a supervisor, this position is responsible in ensuring shift duties are completed thoroughly and safely by all staff on shift. As assigned, the incumbent may have have responsibilities for staff scheduling coverage. The incumbent will perform other related tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Arenas Supervisor II/III. The incumbent in this class will work within the hours specified and on occasion work overtime, as authorized.

Education

-Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education; or equivalency;

• Must hold a valid Refrigeration Operator Certificate, or be a Power Engineer (Fourth Class or higher) as defined in the BC Safety Standards Act-Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation;
• Must have completed a Building Services Worker course or the equivalent training and experience;

Skills

-Must have experience in janitorial work and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in janitorial work;

• Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
• Able to operate a variety of equipment, and perform minor repairs;
• Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs;
• Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public and be neat and presentable in appearance;
• Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, users and other members of the public;
• Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms, logs and reports.
