The City of Chilliwack Recreation & Culture Department seeks an Ice Person II (Casual) to support ice maintenance, arena operations, and janitorial tasks. You will work under supervision in the Arena, maintain ice surfaces, assist with refrigeration plant checks, and help with setup for events.

Applicants must meet education and certification requirements, including Grade 10 and Ice Facility Operator Certificate, and hold a BC driver's license.

Qualifications

• Must have completed a minimum of Grade 10 education.

• Must have prior training for arena ice surface preparation.
• Must have janitorial work experience.

Posting #: 2026-83 Title: Ice Person II (Casual) Department: Recreation & Culture Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Recreation and Culture Department through reliable performance in ice maintenance, general facility maintenance and janitorial tasks, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices.

The incumbent in this class will be responsible for performing a variety of ice maintenance, general maintenance and janitorial tasks ranging in degree of complexity and responsibility and exercising a certain degree of independent judgement; operating a variety of machinery and equipment such as ice resurfacing machines, ice edgers, and power tools. The incumbent will maintain the Arena ice surfaces in proper condition and assume responsibility for the Refrigeration Plant and related equipment; under general supervision of the Arenas Supervisor II or Arenas Supervisor III. The incumbent will perform regular Refrigeration Plant and facility checks, maintaining required readings, logs, and reports. They will perform a variety of tasks such as minor carpentry, and plumbing on facilities, maintaining equipment and grounds as directed. They will perform janitorial tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, stripping and cleaning and servicing washrooms; washing windows and surfaces. The incumbent will be required to clear snow; set up and dismantle equipment, fixtures and facilities for special functions, and ensure the security of buildings to which the incumbent is assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for meeting and dealing with the public; being polite, courteous and tactful, providing assistance to the public/users in accordance with established policies.

The incumbent in this class will work within the hours specified and on occasion work overtime, as authorized. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Education: -Must have completed a minimum of Grade 10 education;

• Must hold a valid Ice Facility Operator Certificate (or higher certification) as defined in the BC Safety Standard Act – Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation; Skills:
• Must have previous training in and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in the preparation of Arena ice surfaces;
• Must have experience in janitorial work and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in janitorial work;
• Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
• Able to operate a variety of equipment, and perform minor repairs;
• Able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs;
• Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public, and be neat and presentable in appearance;
• Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with coworkers, users and other members of the public;
• Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, and complete required forms, logs and reports. Salary: $36.37 per hour (2026 rate)
