Job summary

St. Joseph's Hospice in Sarnia-Lambton, Ontario, is seeking an experienced Human Resources Generalist to support leaders and employees across both unionized and non-unionized areas of the organization.

This role delivers a broad range of HR services while ensuring compliance with employment legislation, organizational policies, and collective agreements. The position fosters a positive workplace culture and supports organizational excellence.

Qualifications

  • HR certificate, diploma, degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive HR experience.
  • Experience supporting both unionized and non-unionized employees.
  • Experience interpreting and administering collective agreements.
  • Experience in labour relations, grievances and arbitration preparation.
  • Experience managing WSIB, disability, attendance, accommodations and return-to-work programs.
  • Knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and privacy compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide employee relations guidance related to performance, attendance, conflict resolution, investigations, and engagement.
  • Interpret and administer collective agreements and advise on employment legislation and policies.
  • Lead or support collective bargaining and contract negotiations as applicable.
  • Advise leaders on grievance management, investigations, dispute resolution and arbitration prep.
  • Lead recruitment and onboarding processes to support successful hires.
  • Coordinate attendance management, early intervention, and return-to-work initiatives.
  • Manage WSIB and disability processes, including accommodations and communication with insurers.
  • Maintain accurate HR records for privacy and retention requirements.
  • Prepare HR documents, employment agreements, and correspondence.
  • Participate in HR projects, policy development, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Position Description

We are seeking an experienced, collaborative, and proactive Human Resources Generalist to support our leaders and employees across both unionized and non-unionized areas of the organization. The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for delivering a broad range of human resources services while ensuring compliance with employment legislation, organizational policies, and, where applicable, collective agreements. This position plays a key role in fostering a positive workplace culture and supporting organizational excellence.

Qualifications
  • Human Resources Certificate, Diploma, Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Experience supporting both unionized and non-unionized employees.
  • Experience interpreting and administering collective agreements.
  • Experience participating in or leading collective bargaining and contract negotiations.
  • Experience managing labour relations matters, including grievance administration and dispute resolution.
  • Experience managing WSIB claims, disability management, attendance management, workplace accommodation, and return-to-work programs.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario employment legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, and other applicable employment legislation.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation or working toward certification.
  • Experience in healthcare, hospice, long-term care, and in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience with HRIS reporting, policy development, and organizational change initiatives.
Skills, Abilities and Experience
  • Provide employee relations guidance related to performance management, attendance management, conflict resolution, workplace investigations, and employee engagement.
  • Interpret and administer collective agreements, where applicable, and provide guidance on employment legislation and organizational policies.
  • Lead or support collective bargaining, contract negotiations, and the administration of collective agreements, where applicable.
  • Provide labour relations advice and support to leaders, including grievance management, investigations, dispute resolution, and preparation for arbitration or mediation, where applicable.
  • Lead the recruitment and onboarding process, including preparing job postings, coordinating candidate communications, facilitating pre-employment requirements, to support a successful onboarding experience.
  • Coordinate attendance management programs, including monitoring absenteeism, facilitating early intervention, and supporting return-to-work initiatives.
  • Manage workplace injury claims and coordinate all aspects of WSIB administration, including reporting, modified work, and return-to-work programs.
  • Coordinate disability management processes, including short-term and long-term disability claims, workplace accommodations, and communication with employees, healthcare providers, and third-party insurers.
  • Maintain accurate employee records to ensure compliance with applicable privacy legislation and organizational record retention requirements.
  • Prepare HR reports, employment agreements, correspondence, employment letters, and other documentation.
  • Participate in HR projects, policy development, organizational initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.
