Job summary

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking an HR Generalist to support the HR Department and Director in recruitment, onboarding, performance management, payroll, and compliance. The role will impact people practices aligned with AFN mandates and policies.

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, you will handle full-cycle recruitment, employee relations, onboarding, training, and benefits administration, with occasional travel and flexible hours as needed.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 5 years of progressively senior HR experience, preferably in non-profit or First Nations sectors.
  • CHRP/CHRL designation is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian labor laws (Canada Labour Code, etc.).
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems (BambooHR, HR Downloads) and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Recruitment & Staffing: manage full-cycle recruitment including interviews and background checks.
  • Employee Relations: advise managers and staff on HR policies and performance issues.
  • Onboarding & Orientation: coordinate onboarding and orientation sessions.
  • Training & Development: track mandatory training and support career growth initiatives.
  • Performance Management: assist with performance reviews and retention efforts.
  • Payroll & Benefits: administer benefits and payroll records.
  • Offboarding: manage exit processes and documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.

Position Overview

The HR Generalist will provide support to the HR department and the Director of HR in all aspects of human resources management, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, disability leave management, employee relations, payroll, and compliance. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on our organization's people practices, ensuring alignment with AFN's mandate, policies, and goals.

Reporting to the Director, Human Resources will have the following,

Key Responsibilities:
  • Recruitment & Staffing: Manage the full-cycle recruitment process, including interviews, background checks, and job offers.
  • Employee Relations: Advise and support managers and staff on HR policies, employee performance, and conflict resolution.
  • Onboarding & Orientation: Coordinate employee onboarding, conduct orientation sessions, and assist with employee recognition programs.
  • Training & Development: Ensure compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, track professional development, and support career growth initiatives.
  • Performance Management: Assist with performance reviews, provide advice on performance management practices, and support retention efforts.
  • Payroll & Benefits: Administer employee benefits, manage the administrative aspects of payroll, and ensure accuracy of employee records.
  • Offboarding: Facilitate the offboarding process, including exit interviews and preparation of documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Who can apply
  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5 years of progressively senior HR experience, preferably within the non-profit or First Nations sectors.
  • Certified Human Resources designation (CHRP or CHRL) an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian labor laws, including the Canada Labour Code, Human Rights Act, and Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems (e.g., Bamboo HR, HR Downloads) and MS Office.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Bilingual (English/French) is an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office-based, with frequent travel required for meetings, and events.
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary to meet organizational needs.
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations and adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
  • Capacity to manage complex and sensitive issues with professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity.
