As a Horticulture Foreman, you’ll lead onsite planting operations and work closely with our team to create award-winning outdoor spaces. Position Overview
The Horticulture Foreman is responsible for managing all aspects of horticultural installations, including plant layout, pre-planting, and planting, while ensuring job site efficiency, safety, and quality. The Foreman leads the planting crew, coordinates with internal teams and clients, and ensures that all tasks are performed to a high standard. This is a leadership role requiring deep horticultural knowledge, effective communication, and the ability to guide a team through complex residential and commercial landscape projects.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Execution & Site Management
• Lead softscape installation and horticulture crews onsite from start to finish.
• Manage pre-planting, planting, mulching, staking, and softscape installations.
• Ensure labor efficiency, site organization, and pace targets are consistently met.
• Receive and inspect plant deliveries, ensure correct plant handling and layout.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.
• Safely operate and inspect trucks, skid steers, and mini-excavators.
• Assist in craning materials as needed.
• Execute and enforce jobsite safety protocols and required documentation.
2. Leadership & Team Development
• Mentor and train assistant foremen and crew members in plant care and jobsite efficiency.
• Enforce adherence to Houston Landscapes’ core values and work standards.
• Conduct daily huddles, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
• Provide feedback, conduct verbal discipline when needed, and escalate formal issues appropriately.
3. Communication & Coordination
• Communicate effectively with Project Managers, Landscape Architects, and clients, while elevating communication to the Horticulture Manager or supervisor as needed.
• Maintain thorough documentation of schedule changes, material usage, and on-site decisions.
• Keep the Horticulture Manager informed of site progress, crew needs, and client feedback.
• Coordinate and attend onsite meetings, nursery approvals, and project hand-offs.
4. Administrative Duties
• Submit accurate daily timecards, receipts, material units installed, and subcontractor slips.
• Participate in project completion reviews and post-job reporting.
• Review P&L reports and completion summaries to identify improvement areas.
5. Health & Safety
• Ensure all team members comply with WorkSafeBC and internal safety protocols.
• Report incidents/near misses to the Safety Manager.
• Complete and file safety documents including FLHAs, toolbox talks, and equipment inspections.
6. Process Improvement & Support
• Contribute to the development and improvement of internal systems and procedures.
• Participate in company functions, performance evaluations, and department initiatives.
• Assist with warehouse and nursery organization as required.
• Ensure all responsibilities are clearly handed off when unavailable or on leave.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in horticulture and landscape installation.
• Proven ability to lead and train crews on residential and commercial sites.
• Strong knowledge of softscape install techniques and plant health care.
• Experience operating light machinery (skid steer, mini-excavator) and vehicles.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
