As a Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice, you are eager to build hands-on experience while learning from seasoned technicians in a supportive, safety-focused environment. Under the supervision of licensed Journeypersons, you’ll assist in maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of trucks, snow grooming vehicles, small engines, and heavy equipment. This role offers the opportunity to develop your mechanical skills while contributing to the reliable operation of essential equipment across all seasons.
Responsibilities
- Assist in performing inspections, maintenance, and repairs on trucks, heavy equipment, snow grooming vehicles, snowmobiles, and small engines under the supervision of certified technicians.
- Support diagnostic efforts using manual techniques and computerized tools; report findings to supervisors or journeypersons.
- Learn to adjust, replace, and repair components in alignment with manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols.
- Participate in equipment testing following repairs to confirm functionality and performance.
- Maintain accurate records of tasks performed, parts used, and time spent on jobs.
- Help manage and track inventory of mechanical parts, tools, and shop supplies.
- Follow safe work practices at all times, contributing to a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Participate in seasonal preparation and transition of vehicles and equipment.
- Work alongside Journeypersons and contribute to routine shop upkeep, fueling schedules, and proper waste handling per environmental standards.
- Stay current with OH&S policies, attend safety meetings, and actively promote a culture of workplace safety.
- Assist with shop duties as assigned and seek guidance to expand knowledge and technical skills.
Qualifications
- Registered Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice, 2 nd or 3 rd Year
- Previous hands-on experience with equipment maintenance (through work, co-op, or school) is an asset
- Basic understanding of hydraulics, diesel engines, and electrical systems
- Willingness to work in variable conditions and take on physically demanding tasks
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a commitment to learning
- Valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work on your feet for extended periods
- Frequent bending, lifting, and use of hand and power tools
- Comfortable working in proximity to hazardous materials (with provided PPE)
- Flexibility to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
