Job summary

WinSport is seeking an experienced Heavy Duty Mechanic to maintain our fleet of trucks, snow grooming vehicles, grooming equipment, and small engines. You will diagnose, repair, and service complex hydraulic and diesel systems while upholding safety and quality standards.

You will mentor apprentices and collaborate with foremen to ensure timely maintenance, equipment reliability, and peak performance in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician with Red Seal preferred.
  • 3–5 years hands-on snow cat/snow grooming maintenance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of hydrostatic drive systems and hydraulic controls.
  • Experience with diesel engines and air brake systems.
  • Welding and fabrication experience; mechanical modifications.
  • Two-stroke and four-stroke engine repair knowledge.
  • Valid driver's license; air brake endorsement or Class 3/Class 1 asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, servicing, and repairs on fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain trucks, snow grooming vehicles, snowmobiles, trailers, and specialized gear.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and other systems.
  • Repair, adjust, or replace defective components per specifications.
  • Run tests post-repair to verify reliability, safety, and performance.
  • Assist with seasonal preparation and pre-season readiness inspections.
  • Operate vehicles for testing, diagnostics, and maintenance as needed.
  • Use diagnostic tools and troubleshoot to identify issues.
  • Provide mentorship to apprentices and junior staff.
  • Identify downtime causes and recommend preventative measures.

Position Overview

As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, you take pride in maintaining a safe, reliable, and high-performing fleet of vehicles and equipment. This hands-on role is critical to the operational success of our organization, ensuring our trucks, heavy machinery, grooming vehicles, small engines, and seasonal equipment are operating efficiently and safely. Responsibilities

Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, servicing, and repairs on a variety of fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair trucks, heavy machinery, snow grooming vehicles, snowmobiles, small engines, trailers, and specialized equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and other equipment systems.
  • Repair, adjust, or replace defective components in accordance with manufacturer specifications, technical requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Perform functional and operational tests following repairs to verify equipment reliability, safety, and performance.
  • Assist with seasonal preparation of vehicles and equipment, including winterization, summer preparation, and operational readiness inspections.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment as required for testing, diagnostics, transportation, and maintenance purposes.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and manual troubleshooting techniques to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and determine appropriate repair or maintenance solutions.
  • Research manufacturer specifications, service procedures, technical information, and repair requirements as needed.
  • Provide technical support and knowledge sharing to apprentices, junior team members, and other staff.
  • Identify potential equipment issues and recommend preventative measures to minimize downtime and repair costs.

Shop Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain accurate service records, inspection documentation, daily work logs, and equipment maintenance history.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of parts, supplies, tools, fluids, and other shop resources.
  • Monitor supply levels and communicate parts and material requirements to leadership.
  • Assist with ordering and receiving parts, fluids, and maintenance supplies as required.
  • Maintain and manage fuel, lubrication, and fluid systems, including the proper handling and disposal of waste in accordance with applicable provincial requirements.
  • Properly use, maintain, and store tools, diagnostic equipment, machinery, and shop resources.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free personal and shared workspace.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all Occupational Health & Safety requirements, safe work procedures, environmental regulations, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure maintenance activities and shop practices are completed in accordance with applicable safety and environmental standards.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices at all times.
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and OH&S communications.
  • Proactively identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment concerns.
  • Contribute to a positive culture of safety and accountability within the maintenance shop.
  • Work collaboratively with mechanics, apprentices, the Foreman, and other operational teams to prioritize repairs and meet organizational needs.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to apprentices and junior team members.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and supportive work environment through effective communication and teamwork.
  • Communicate equipment condition, maintenance requirements, repair progress, and operational concerns to leadership and affected teams.
  • Assist other operational teams when required to support organizational objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes, shop organization, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at reducing equipment downtime, improving preventative maintenance practices, and streamlining shop operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician (or equivalent Red Seal certification)
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in snow cat or snow grooming vehicle maintenance
  • Strong knowledge of hydrostatic drive systems and hydraulic controls
  • Experience with automotive fleet maintenance, including diesel engines and air brake systems
  • Familiarity with welding, fabrication, and general mechanical modifications
  • Competence in two-stroke and four-stroke engine repair and maintenance
  • Valid driver's license; air brake endorsement or Class 3/Class 1 license is an asset

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work on your feet for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, lifting, reaching, kneeling, and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs. (23 kg) frequently.
  • Regular exposure to noise, moving equipment, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, and other shop hazards while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Work performed primarily indoors in a maintenance shop environment with occasional outdoor work.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions when servicing outdoor equipment or supporting field repairs.
  • Ability to operate vehicles, equipment, and machinery as required.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or respond to operational needs as required.
