Job summary

Paladin Security is seeking a Healthcare Access Control Security Officer for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. You will operate AI-powered weapon detection and access systems, screen entrants, and support a safe, welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors.

The role requires strong communication, English fluency, and security certifications. Paladin offers UOF/MOAB training with a 6-month commitment and a full-time night schedule (4 on 4 off, 2300–0700) at the Sydney site.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain Security License for Nova Scotia.
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C.
  • English fluency (oral and written).
  • Experience in security or related field preferred.
  • Certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and MOAB required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor AI-based weapon detection and access control systems at hospital entrances.
  • Engage with patients, visitors and staff in a professional, courteous manner during screening.
  • Respond to alerts, conduct secondary screening when needed, escalate per NSHA protocols.
  • Provide directions and reassurance to entrants while maintaining security.
  • Maintain records of incidents and equipment performance.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff, security teams and law enforcement as required.
  • Uphold infection control and hospital safety policies; ensure smooth entry flow.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, respect and inclusivity.

The Cape Breton Regional Hospital is located in Sydney and is the regional referral and trauma center for Cape Breton Island. The Cape Breton Regional is part of a four-hospital complex that also includes Glace Bay, New Waterford Consolidated and Northside General Hospitals.

Position Summary:

The Healthcare Access Control Officer will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors by operating advanced AI-powered weapon detection systems at the entrances of larger and regional hospitals within NSHA. This position requires exceptional communication and customer service skills to provide a safe, welcoming environment while maintaining a strong security presence.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and monitor AI-based weapon detection and access control systems at designated hospital entry points.
  • Engage with patients, visitors, and staff in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner while conducting screening procedures.
  • Respond to system alerts, conduct secondary screening when necessary, and escalte incidents according to NSHA security protocols.
  • Provide clear directions, support, and reassurance to individuals passing through the access control process.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, security breaches, and equipment performance.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff, security teams, and law enforcement partners as required.
  • Uphold infection control and hospital safety policies while ensuring smooth traffic flow through entry points.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity within the healthcare environment.
Prerequisites & Qualifications:
  • Ability to obtain Security License for the province of Nova Scotia
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C (from a CSA-approved vendor)
  • English (oral and written) fluency is a must
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
  • Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
  • Please be aware: The UoF/MOAB training is not paid as it is a pre-requisite; however, Paladin will cover all of the costs of the training with a 6-month commitment to the position/availability
