Health & Safety Manager
Women Building Futures (WBF) is a non-profit organization that empowers and supports women towards economic securitythrough readiness supports and industry recognized training and resulting careers with WBF Employers of Choice.
Reporting to WBF’s Director of People and Culture, the role is accountable to lead and maintain WBF’s Health and Safety policies, programs and management systems across all our operations and help build and promote a positive Health and Safety culture.
This is a primarily in-person role at our head office location in Edmonton, with some flexible work from home days; however, WBF operates our life-changing programs all over Alberta and is entering Ontario. This role is responsible for our main Edmonton region location as well as our partner training providers in other regions. Occasional travel may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Ownership and Oversight
- Implement new H&S policies, procedures, and programs as required. Maintain and provide oversight on existing H&S policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ensure WBF adheres to appropriate Occupational Health and Safety
expectations and legislation in the areas it operates in.
- Ownership of WBF’s emergency preparedness procedures and
drills
- Lead and monitor safety practices within the organization by creating, assessing,
complying, and advising management on ways to lower risks and prevent
events.
- Maintain ACSA Certificate of Recognition (COR) standards and conduct internal audits as
per COR certification
requirements.
- Oversight of new hire/student safety
orientations.
- Oversight of contractor safety
requirements and orientations.
- Ownership of H&S related risk assessments, safety audit systems, inspections, and
safety meetings.
- Ownership of H&S audit and inspection management systems
- Ownership and management of WBF’s H&S budget
- Help facilitate and guide the Health and Safety Committee in presenting recommendations to the
organization.
- Responsible for the development of quarterly H&S Board reports
- Oversees and directs incident investigation and
analysis.
- Responsible for all H&S metrics and for keeping records of H&S related incidents and closure of recommendations / administration of corrective
actions.
- Conducts offsite H&S visits of WBF staff, training partner facilities etc. as
necessary.
- Ensure processes are in place for the safe operation of shops, tools, and
equipment.
- Manage the preventative maintenance program for workshop tools and equipment
- Ensure personal protective equipment is available and used
correctly.
Health and Safety Training
- Work with our Training and Curriculum team as the subject matter expert to implement safety curriculum within our training programs.
- Engage with staff, students and instructors to ensure the intended implementation and oversight of safety
training.
- Organize and enable staff participation in H&S training as
required.
Education and Training
- Post-Secondary education in related HSE discipline
- A proven HSE leader, 7+ Years of progressive experience in health and safety trades environment
- Safety designation - CRSP, CRST, or CSO preferred
- Experienced COR safety auditor, experience with ACSA audit tool preferred
- Experienced course facilitator familiar with adult education principles.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills and ability to adapt to different audiences.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision while paying close attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Teams, Word, Outlook
and Excel.
- A knowledge of remote work practices and ergonomic safety is an asset.
