Your opportunity:

The Facilities Management and Space Planning office manages a complex set of facilities for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine (TFOM), on campus and off – and is responsible for consultation, planning, design and implementation of sophisticated, complicated projects for highly specialized research and academic needs.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) resides within The Division of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) with the broad mission to ensure that an environmentally responsible, safe and healthy work, research and study environment exists at the University of Toronto.

As a Health and Safety Technician, you will be responsible for supporting safe and compliant lab operations in TFOM during routine inspections, lab relocations, and facility transitions. You will work closely with the EHS to support alignment with institutional safety standards and regulatory requirements. Using your strong attention to detail and collaborative skills, you will work with lab staff, the broader facilities team and utility providers to coordinate safe moves, verify infrastructure readiness, and coordinate on the resolution of health and safety issues. Leveraging your knowledge of chemical, biological and radiation safety, you will conduct inspections, monitor regulatory compliance, and support the setup of labs in a new state-of-the-art facility.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring observance of health and safety/security regulations for a large number of TFOM laboratories as part of a team
  • Probing for information with laboratory staff and management to understand the safety requirements and expectations for new laboratory setups
  • Coordinating with facility management and Health and Safety Officers to ensure new laboratory spaces meetrequired specifications and comply with University of Toronto requirements
  • Developing and maintaining procedures for relocation plans, including timelines, resource allocation, etc
  • Ensuring all necessary safety protocols are followed during the packing, moving, and unpacking of hazardous materials or chemicals

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g. science, life sciences) or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum four (4) years' relevant experience supporting health and safety inspections, safety operations and laboratory relocations to monitor compliance and minimize risk
  • Experience with assessing compliance during visits in permitted labs using a predefined checklist and working with and providing reports to compliance inspectors within a large academic setting
  • Knowledge of lab design and experience with lab set up, performance testing and decommissioning
  • Professional Certification such as Safety Engineering/Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health and Safety/Biosafety (one or more of CRSP, CIH/ROH) or in the process of obtaining
  • Professional Memberships/Affiliations in one or more of: Association of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario or in the process of obtaining
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring and maintaining laboratory equipment, consumables and supplies
  • Advanced proficiency with M365
  • Experience with Environmental Health & Safety databases and database management
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with faculty conducting a wide range of research
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow established process
