Job summary

Hitachi Rail in Toronto is offering a Hardware Test Engineering Intern role for a 16-month co-op. The internship combines hands-on hardware work with software-assisted test systems, and includes a hybrid on-site/remote schedule in a global digital transformation setting.

You will document designs and test procedures for simulators and automated hardware test equipment, help manage PLM documentation, and assist with part-numbering and upgrades.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Engineering Science, or Engineering Physics.
  • Completion of the third year of an undergraduate program.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and familiarity with project-based work environments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical component specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Experience with CAD software, such as AutoCAD (an asset).
  • Experience with schematics; schematic software such as OrCAD (an asset).
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong conceptual thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • High attention to detail and curiosity to understand activity criticality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Self-starter with a proactive mindset.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week for the full duration of the internship; onsite five days per week during the first two weeks; 2-5 onsite days per week thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the design engineering team to document the designs and test procedures for simulators and automated hardware test equipment.
  • Manage the process to approve and release documentation in a PLM system.
  • Coordinate with Component Engineering to request part numbers for new components for simulators and testers.
  • Support upgrade, modification and assembly of simulators and automated test systems.
  • Assist in validation and debugging of simulators using LabView and TestStand.

Position Summary

Support Hardware Test Engineering in the documenting of simulators and automated hardware test equipment designs. The position also requires the maintenance, assembly and troubleshooting of simulators and automated test equipment.

Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Work closely with the design engineering team to document the designs and test procedures associated with simulators and automated hardware test equipment
  • Take an active role in managing the process utilized to approve and release the documentation in a PLM system
  • Work with Component Engineering to request part numbers for new components to be incorporated in the simulator and automated hardware tester design
  • Work closely with engineering to support the upgrade, modification and assembly of simulators and automated hardware test systems
  • Support the validation and debugging of simulators utilizing LabView and TestStand
Required Skills and Experience
  • The successful candidate should be working towards an Engineering degree (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Engineering Science, or Engineering Physics degree).
  • Completion of the third year of an undergraduate program.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and familiarity with project‑based work environments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical component specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Experience with CAD software, such as AutoCAD (an asset).

  • Able to work 40 hours per week for the full duration of the internship. During the two weeks, the intern is expected to onsite five days per week. From the third week onward, 2-5 onsite days per week are required depending on team needs. Flexibility is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Co-op student available for a 16-month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.
  • Previous co-op/internship experience is a plus.
