Job summary

Hitachi Rail in Toronto, Ontario, invites applications for a Hardware Test Engineering Intern for a 16‑month internship. You will document test procedures for simulators and automated hardware testers, manage PLM documentation, and coordinate with engineering to source parts.

The role blends on-site and hybrid work with hands-on projects. Ideal candidates are pursuing an engineering degree (Electrical/Mechatronics, etc.), with strong communication and CAD experience (AutoCAD/OrCAD).

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in a relevant field and current 3rd year of undergraduate study.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with project-based environments is a plus.
  • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD) is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Document designs and test procedures for simulators and hardware test equipment with design engineering.
  • Manage the approval and release process for docs in a PLM system.
  • Coordinate with Component Engineering to obtain part numbers for new components.
  • Support upgrade, modification and assembly of simulators and test systems.
  • Assist in validation and debugging of simulators using LabVIEW/TestStand.

Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Work closely with the design engineering team to document the designs and test procedures associated with simulators and automated hardware test equipment
  • Take an active role in managing the process utilized to approve and release the documentation in a PLM system
  • Work with Component Engineering to request part numbers for new components to be incorporated in the simulator and automated hardware tester design
  • Work closely with engineering to support the upgrade, modification and assembly of simulators and automated hardware test systems
  • Support the validation and debugging of simulators utilizing LabView and TestStand
Required Skills and Experience
  • The successful candidate should be working towards an Engineering degree (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Engineering Science, or Engineering Physics degree).
  • Completion of the third year of an undergraduate program.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and familiarity with project-based work environments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical component specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Experience with CAD software, such as AutoCAD (an asset).
  • Experience with schematics
  • Experience with schematic software, such OrCAD (as asset)
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills with the ability to understand the "big picture" and apply critical thinking to problem-solving.
  • High attention to detail and curiosity to understand activity criticality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Self-starter with a proactive mindset.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week for the full duration of the internship.
  • During the two weeks, the intern is expected to be onsite five days per week.
  • From the third week onward, 2-5 onsite days per week are required depending on team needs.
  • Flexibility is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Co-op student available for a 16-month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.
  • Previous co-op/internship experience is a plus.
