Job summary

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is seeking a full-time Educational Assistant to support students in Grades 1-6. The role emphasizes assisting with cognitive, communication, physical, and social development, and implementing classroom programming under guidance.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and a multidisciplinary team, maintain documentation, and help with adaptive technologies and behaviour plans as needed.

Qualifications

• Educational Assistant certificate or diploma required.
• May be required to take SMG training for safe interventions (similar to NVCI).

Responsibilities

• Support students' growth in cognition, communication, physical and social development.
• Support and implement teacher-directed programming.
• Collaborate under guidance of teacher, CST and multi-disciplinary team.
• Complete student or safety documentation as directed.
• Implement specialist strategies (OT, PT, SLP) to reach goals.
• Apply behaviour management and educational strategies to facilitate learning.
• Communicate with students using positive reinforcements and school behaviour strategies.
• Observe student behaviour to promote positive outcomes and mitigate negatives.
• Provide structure to help complete learning outcomes.
• Work at student level during activities and provide supervision.
• Assist use of adaptive/learning technologies and devices including speech/non-verbal communication.
• If required, implement Positive Behaviour Plan.
• Comply with health and safety requirements per supervisor.

• Provide high level of structure to facilitate completion of required learning outcomes
• Work and play at student's physical level of their activities
• Provide support in use of adaptive and learning technologies using a variety of devices and associated programs, including for speech and non-verbal communication
• Successfully implement the Positive Behaviour Plan(PBP), if required
• Swim program, able to swim in 50 meters, level 1 and 2
• Medical Procedures – including, but not limited to, Catheter, Tube feeding, Feeding and swallowing support, toileting routines or diabetic monitoring may be required
• Able to understand, implement and support modified curriculum
• Able to work with and support students with Autism or complex medical needs
• Physically handle and transfer students when unsafe
• Physical ability to lift and move students
• Provide school directed indoor and outdoor student supervision
• Follow all relevant health and safety requirements as directed by supervisor

Employee is expected to work with behaviours related/associated with conduct, obsessive/compulsive, trauma and stress related, severe chronic depressive, feeding and/or eating disorders etc. Other behaviours related to ADHD, emotional/behavioural, learning and speech & language-related disabilities, etc may be encountered.
