Job summary

Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited in Ottawa, Ontario is seeking a Grade Person to assist the foreperson in setting grade and alignment using GPS and surveying data, and to ensure grading work meets project specifications.

Overview:

Grade Person will work under the supervision of a foreperson setting grades, checking elevations, dumping trucks, and working with heavy equipment. This individual is responsible for carrying out assigned tasks/responsibilities efficiently and effectively. They will meet quality standards and production targets set by the organization. They will follow established procedures, guidelines, and best practices. It is important that they maintain open and constructive communication with colleagues, supervisors, and other stakeholders. Finally, they will show punctuality and reliability in fulfilling work obligations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret construction plans, blueprints, and survey data to determine the required grade and alignment for the project.
  • Set grade stakes, markers, or other reference points at specified intervals along the construction site to guide equipment operators in achieving the correct grade and alignment.
  • Regularly check and verify the accuracy of the grading work against established grade stakes or reference points using surveying instruments such as levels and transits.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with equipment operators, surveyors, and other crew members to ensure that grading work aligns with project plans.
  • Mark construction lines, cut lines, fill lines, and other critical points on the construction site to guide equipment operators in their work.
  • Calculate the required depth of cuts or fills at various locations to achieve the specified grade, taking into account existing topography and project requirements.
  • Monitor and assess the quality of grading work, identifying and addressing any deviations from the desired grade or alignment.
  • Provide guidance to equipment operators on necessary adjustments or corrections to achieve the correct grade, including adding or removing material as needed.
  • Identify and address issues related to grade and alignment promptly, working collaboratively with equipment operators to find solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively with equipment operators, laborers, and supervisors to achieve project goals and meet deadlines.
  • Use GPS and other survey instruments to establish correct line and grade

Requirements:

Valid Ontario Driver’s License
access to a reliable vehicle
2-3 years of experience

Wage Range:

The hourly range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $28.00 and $35.00 per hour. However, the range offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations.
