Job summary

Canadian Natural is seeking a GIS intern to support environmental projects in Fort McMurray. You will create and maintain ArcGIS Online maps, assist with Field Maps and Survey123, and help post-process data using MS Access.

You will work 20% in field locations and 80% in office environments, with a 12-month term starting May 2027. The role requires ESRI product experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a GIS degree, applied degree or diploma program (co-op/internship).
  • Solid understanding of ESRI products and ArcGIS workflows.
  • ArcGIS Online knowledge is highly recommended.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Physically capable of outdoor field work in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with field data collection and geospatial data management is an asset.
  • Experience with FME, Python, AutoCAD is an asset.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing methods (LiDAR, photogrammetry) is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain Web maps and Web Apps (Experience Builder) within ArcGIS Online.
  • Assist with full-cycle support to Field Maps and Survey123 for ArcGIS.
  • Post-process data from Field Maps, including MS Access tasks.
  • Manage GIS data for environmental projects and regulatory reports.
  • Provide GIS support for regulatory compliance reports and cartography.
  • Develop models and GIS solutions for environmental scenarios.
  • Support non-spatial data management (MS Office).
  • Promote environmental awareness and site compliance.
  • Assist in environmental field tasks such as equipment management and sampling.

In this position, you will assist with providing full-cycle support to projects within FieldMaps and Survey123 for ArcGIS.You will help build and maintain innovative models and GIS solutions for unique environmental situations and provide GIS support for regulatory compliance reports, including data editing, data management, and cartography.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Albian or Horizon Site
  • Shift schedule: 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours/day (Monday – Thursdays) or 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hours/day (Thursday – Thursday)
  • Term length:12 months
  • Term start:May 2027
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes

Students should be aware that work will be 20% in field locations and 80% in office environments.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Create and maintain Web maps and Web Apps (Experience Builder) within ArcGIS Online
  • Assist with providing full-cycle support to projects within Field Maps and Survey123 for ArcGIS
  • Help post-processing data generated through Field Maps, including working with MS Access
  • Manage (review, update, organize) existing and new environmental Geographic Information System (GIS) data
  • Provide GIS support for regulatory compliance reports, including data editing, data management, and cartography
  • Help build and maintain innovative models and GIS solutions for unique environmental situations
  • Assist with non-spatial data management for various Environmental disciplines (MS Office)
  • Promote environmental awareness and compliance throughout the mine site
  • Assist in various environmental field tasks such as equipment management, wildlife management, water sampling, and reclamation monitoring and/or soil samples

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Enrolled in a GIS degree, applied degree or diploma program
  • Solid understanding and experience of ESRI products (ESRI ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Model Builder)
  • ArcGIS Online knowledge is highly recommended
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
  • Must be physically capable of working outside in the field on difficult terrain and in all weather
  • Previous field data collection experience using ArcGIS is an asset
  • Previous FME, Python, AutoCAD experience is an asset
  • An understanding of remote sensing methods and data processing (LiDAR; Photogrammetry) is an asset
