Job summary

Riverside Health Care in Winnipeg, MB is seeking a Payroll Clerk to support day-to-day payroll and benefits processing in a health-care setting. You will audit timesheets, calculate earnings and deductions, and ensure accurate documentation while aligning with collective agreements and regulatory requirements.

You will collaborate with payroll, HR, and finance teams to respond to employee inquiries, support onboarding, and generate payroll-related reports.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education completed.
  • Two-year post-secondary program in HR, Business, or equivalent experience considered.
  • Canadian Payroll Certification preferred; certification expected if not already held.
  • 1–2 years experience in payroll, data entry, or public sector/hospital/union environment.
  • Experience with collective agreements.
  • Experience working in payroll/HRIS environments.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently under high workload.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are assets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties and compliant with policies.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, especially employment standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and assists day-to-day payroll and benefits processing, ensuring accuracy and timelines.
  • Process timesheets, verify earnings and deductions, and maintain documentation.
  • Participate in centralized payroll functions with the team.
  • Perform regular payroll data reconciliations and audits for accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor salary/wages for correctness and compliance.
  • Assist onboarding and provide payroll/benefits guidance to employees and managers.
  • Prepare and distribute payroll reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain knowledge of payroll legislation, collective agreements, standards, policies.
  • Support grievance procedures related to payroll when needed.
  • Collaborate on SOPs and policies for payroll and HRIS; assist staff and management with contracts and policies.

QualificationsRequired:
  • Grade 12 SecondarySchool Diploma or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated ability tofunction under deadlines, work independently and cope with high volume ofwork.

GeneralAccountabilities:
  • Supports and assists inthe day-to-day processing of payroll and benefits in compliance withlegislation, policies, and collective agreements, ensuring accuracy andtimelines are met.
SpecificAccountabilities:
  • In compliance withinternal controls, collective agreements, legislation, policies &procedures, business practice, the Payroll Clerk:
  • Supports payrollprocessing including timesheet auditing, verification, earningscalculation, and deduction processing.
  • Ensures payroll isdocumented, authorized/approved, accurate and submitted in a timely andefficient manner.
  • Participates as part ofthe payroll team who maintain effective and efficient centralizedday-to-day payroll functions.
  • Perform regularreconciliations and audits of payroll data and processes to ensureaccuracy, data integrity, and compliance, including reviews of timecardsand hours used in pay calculations.
  • Monitor salary andwages to ensure correctness and compliance.
  • Assist with onboardingand providing guidance to employees and managers regarding payroll andbenefits questions.
  • Prepare and distributepayroll-related reports for internal and external stakeholders asrequired.
  • Thorough understandingof payroll-related legislation, collective agreements, standards, policiesand procedures.
  • Assists and supportsgrievance procedure if relevant to payroll.
  • Collaborates on thedevelopment, review, and maintenance of standard operating procedures andpolicies for payroll and HRIS. Provides payroll support to staff,management, and end users, including interpretation of contracts,legislation, and policies.
  • Liaise, engage, consultand collaborate with management, staff, and external stakeholders, asrequired.
  • Maintain team oriented,cohesive and integrated environment with staff, management, partners andstakeholders.
  • Participate in qualityassurance efforts related to payroll accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist with annual financial auditsby providing required payroll documentation.
  • Attend meetings as required toprovide payroll-related input.
  • Perform other duties notspecifically mentioned in the policies, procedures or job descriptions orthat may, from time to time, be assigned.
  • Administers employee group benefits and the HOOPP pensionplan, including enrollments, terminations, leaves, changes, andcontribution management. Ensures accurate and timely processing, reporting, andcompliance with policies, legislation, and collective agreements.
  • Provides support and education to employees regarding benefit andpension eligibility, responds to inquiries, liaises with external providers,and maintains up-to-date records in payroll and HRIS systems.
